It was the characterization. Scotty and Uhura in love? Scotty knocking himself out hitting his head on a bulkhead? Kirk telling Spock "I ought to knock you on your damn ass?" This film had weak FX and parts of the script can be criticized, but to me it was the characters not being themselves that made it not seem much like Trek.

Well the script had forced humor attached to it which negatively impacted the movie.

For me, it was a combination the special effects and models and the lacklustre final act - that is to say, the showdown with 'God'. Quite underwhelming, it must be said.
