If you want a anwsere to this kind of questions, you should specify your movie taste.

Anyway it is definetly worth 5 bucks. Keep in mind that this movie doesent contain violance for his own purpose, nore for entertainment. It is slow, with few words spoken. Contains violent scenes (and i don´t mean blood and brains) and shows strong feelings but it never gets kitschy.

I wouldn't say it was worth 5 bucks, I found it slow and turgid. If you like to watch a man impassively slap other people around for no particular reason, while the slappee stands there like a lemon rather than fighting back, then this is the film for you.

I just wasn't impressed.

That those people let themselves get slapped around so much makes for both a great deal of dark uneasy humour and a social commentary on the passivity of Japan's society.

It's a common theme in Takeshi's work, and indeed in Japanese film in general - see how Kikujiro marauds around Japan beating and threatening people without resistance, and the relevant discussion on that film's discussion board.

Worth five bucks? You BET YOUR A$$ it is. This is a fantastic movie I first saw 7 years ago and have been obsessed with Takeshi Kitano ever since. I now own everything on DVD except "Mr.Lawrence" (I prefer my life David Bowie free) and Takeshis' only because I haven't tracked it down with English subtitles.

The last half hour is worth about $1.50, but the rest of it ain't worth sh!t.

it's worth $50.

I originally spent $20 on a vhs of this film when it first came out on vhs. have bought every dvd version of this film -- 3 -- I could find, hoping to see this film in great quality at some point in my life. Latest version of DVD is the highest quality I've ever seen the film in, so who knows.

Anyway this will start your Kitano obsession.
