Question regarding ending.

Why did Azuma blow away his sister? That was pretty cold blooded.

I suppose it was because he was suffering from Antisocial personality disorder, so as we see he just acts on impulse all the time. I though that he probably just decided in an instant that her life was ruined, and the best thing he could do was just end it.

I would agree that it was cold blooded, but it seems to me that it was the only way he knew to react.

He shot his sister to end her suffering. She had become hopelessly addicted to heroin and he figured it was best to put her out of her misery before she suffered more.

"She had become hopelessly addicted to heroin".

You don't become hopelessly addicted in only a few days. But yes, it seems Azuma saw her as irretrievably corrupted in a world that would only run her down even further, with no hope for a dignified future. Especially without him around much longer.

I agree with the others and i would also like to add that during the film,we see his repulsion to drugs and stuff, which is stronger even than his love to his own blood.

Sorry or bumping an old thread but I watched this yesterday and can't get that horrific act Azuma did out of my head.

My take on this is that his sister was just out of rehab. We never get to know what's really wrong with her. Azuma just says that shes "sick in the head". The fact that she brings home a random guy from a club and sleeps with him even though she lives with her brother could mean that she was influenced by some drug, maybe alcohol or maybe some other substance.

I'm having a hard time believing that you'll get so seriously addicted when you've been forced to take it. But then again, I've never tried heroin so I don't really know, but it's on of the most addictive drug out there I believe.

I had a hard time caring for Azuma. He was clearly a psycho and his coleagues were also wierd and protected his questionable methods.

My point is that I think Azuma killed his sister cause he couldn't stand seeing her going back to her junkie lifestyle. He was also most certainly going to jail after killing those fellows and no one would be lef to take care of his sister, so thought she was better of dead. At least that's how I interpreted it :)

Great movie

You are forgetting one detail; his sister is mentally handicapped. Perhaps, he knew that since he was dying and her being mentally challenged and a junkie, he should just end her "pain"

reply

I clearly stated that it's never explained what's wrong with her. All Azuma says is that "she is sick in the head". And since Azuma is a very irrational fellow, that could mean anything IMO.

I'm not saying that you're wrong, because there's no way we could figure out excatly what Kitano had in mind with the relationship between Azuma and his sister.

But still. If you watch the movie and really try to figure out what's wrong with his sister, you won't find an answer. I just have a hard time seeing what Azuma said about her illness at face value.

Azuma was likely fatally wounded at that point, he was shot at least a couple of times in the torso and that’s really bad news, it doesn’t matter how tough a guy is.

I believe he killed his sister because she was mentally ill, addicted to heroin, prone to being manipulated by scumbags and he figured he wouldn’t be around to help her any more.

It was likely an act of mercy but yes, it was all a bit grim.
