Just a theory

Has anyone ever wondered if Michael (Patrick Dempsey) might be the reincarnated 'Michael' (Granny's husband who has been dead for 20 years)? Even though she's senile in her last days on earth, there's something odd about the way she seemed to know him, and how he suddenly started to remember things, with tears in his eyes, that she told her Michael when he was still alive.

OK, I know it's a stretch, and to delve deep into a somewhat shallow film is kind of silly, but it does make it a little more interesting plot wise. I mean, she finds him in the snow hole, he finds her summer shoes, and Gabby invites him to stay for a week, even though she no longer loves him (as if his visit was meant to be) etc etc.

I think the movie was suggesting that he was her reincarnated husband. Also, the woman who approached him at the cemetery seemed to be Granny as a younger woman, like a ghost or something. But you could also say that maybe he was just playing along, imagining that he was her husband. Maybe he did come to love her, too, in that short time of knowing her.

This is one of my favorite movies. Just in case you didn't know, it's coming out February 12th (2008) on DVD in the USA.

I'm still a little more slanted toward the reincarnation theory. This is also because at the cemetary, when young Granny asked if he had known 'Granny', and he replied something to the effect of, "Not really, I'm just a friend of her grandaughter.", she said, "I'm sorry, you're not who I thought you were." and started to walk away. Suddenly he came to some kind of realization and said "Wait..yes I did know her, and I LOVED HER.". That's when she came back and kissed him, leading one to possibly think that she knew it was her Michael (even from the beginning in the hospital), but needed him to remember and realize it too.

That said, I also think her escape back to her country house (even though she had done it or attempted it several times before), was pertinent in this situation. She wanted to be there one last time, knowing she was going to die, and 'Michael' would finally return to her there.

Then again, like you said, he could have grown to love her, but he spent less than 24 hours with her, and prior to that, was only introduced to her. Something happened during that time, and I don't think it was instant love, if you get my gist. He was with her in the place they loved and once shared together, and it would make sense that that would be the place where her Michael's memories would resurface through the reincarnated Michael.

I haven't seen this movie in years, but I also remember a link to the woman at the cemetary: the picture of Granny as a younger woman that's unwrapped reveals her to be the same (or at least extremely similar) lady. I remember you only get a brief glimpse, the camera moves or a door is shut; something cuts it off.

Again, all this could be merely coincidence intended to make the viewer wonder, and Michael may have just had a sort of epiphany about life & love and not been the reincarnation of Granny's lover. Whatever it is it's all part of the charm of this film.

I thought he was just playing along in that scene with the dollhouse in the background, but I really love the reincarnation idea. So subtle, but poignant.

Wish they'd shown a picture of the grandpa Michael. I wonder who put her summer shoes in the tree? Wonder why they ended up there.

My theory is that she was just a crazy old hag.

Just Wankers - What's that? - just kidding.

Granny was just Granny - certainly not a hag and more than a little ill.
But that was the beauty of Granny - through all the mess her beauty still shined brightly and her appreciation for things beautiful even more so.

In a thousand years I'll be gone ...

Actually, the more I watch this movie; the more I think it's far from shallow and silly. There's more details to this movie that you realize over time. That said, you bring up a good point; who's to say but this film rocks.
