It seems like if you'd go to all that trouble, and put yourself at risk of imprisonment etc., you'd finish what you set out to do (?)

The above poster is right, Diane likely thought she'd mortally wounded them so they'd die at the hospital.
She even says to the doctor when he tells her that Robbie was hit in the spine: "You mean it missed his heart?" So she was aiming for his heart, and thought she hit it.
Plus Diane probably thought it might look TOO suspicious if she showed up with all 3 of her kids DOA.
