Well, I thought it was better than average. It's a pretty loose movie about trendy, pretentious, self-absorbed flibbertigibbits. If that's the sort of thing you're looking for, well, I guess it captures it pretty well. I thought it was engaging enough. It certainly wasn't boring.

But I feel a kind of mean satirical edge to the movie that is not cute at all. I guess it's about love and art . . . or maybe the lack thereof. The relationships in the movie are frankly exploitive, and the characters know it even when they avoid admitting it and even when they want their relationships to "work." They know that you start as a slave, you make enough money to move out and get your own place, and you get your own slave.

And as for the art . . . Good Lord! Sherman says that a ton of stuff from the 1960s was just like what Marley was painting. I think one could say the same of some of Stash's paintings as well. Seriously. Did you notice that no one actually buys any of the paintings?

I kind of like the film so I can only guess why someone might not. Some of the performances were a little weak, a few even languid, and the story is not very tight. I also suspect that some folk might find it hard to have much sympathy for the characters. I can see how that combination could lead some viewers to despise the movie.

I didn't even particularly like any of the characters. I wouldn't invite even one of them to my birthday party. Still, I took a kind of morbid interest in just how awful their lives could become.

It's also got a great cast and an excellent soundtrack, so I did indeed like it. I just didn't love it. Unfortunately, the characters had more appeal to themselves than to me. I'll give this 6/10 stars.
