Why the bad reviews??????

I remember seeing Skin Deep in the theater when it was initially released. It's not a great film by any means, but I found myself enjoying the film for what it was. John Ritter was a pleasure to watch, as he always is, and the duo of him and Blake Edwards collaberating was great. I know that much of the material didn't work, but as a whole I can't understand the 5.2 rating and the poor reviews the film always got. What's the deal? Am I the only one?

The thing is about film reviews is that many people really do follow a film reviews opinion. I normally take in their view, but also leave alot of your own opinion to tell you how you feel. In other words, if you like it, then bully for thoes who don't. I liked it and many of you seemed to, also.

not to rain on your parade, but it was typical self-indulgent BE cr*p. Trite, boring, unfunny (condomn scene was great though), predictable.

I like Ritter, but BE had lost his touch by this point.

You're definitely not the only one asking this question - a great movie by far, funny, thoughtful, well made and beautfiully acted by all concerned. Everything a movie should be in fact. It's rare for Hollywood to make films that can mix splendidly done slapstick comedy along with the intelligence and insight this one has, so Skin Deep is something of a speciality. Roger Ebert sang some good praises for it at least!

I agree, this is NOT the greatest film ever made, possibly NOT a great film, but it is one of the funniest films I have ever seen. Does that make it great? To me, it does; I guess I could call it one of my guilty pleasures...however. Perhaps it was the mood I was in, I don't know...but I literally fell out of my chair in the theatre, laughing at the scenes when Ritter was driving out of the parking lot after his electrical muscle relaxation "treatment" and when he was in a glow in the dark condom battle with the Brit! I believe that Blake Edwards films are generally underrated and overlooked because they did not aspire to "art film" levels, just to the common movie goer. I love this film and don't care if all of the elite film critics in the world sneer at me for saying so.

This movie had charm and charisma by many of the actors involved. Not high art but entertaining on a certain level. Unless you are really a highbrow snob you will find something funny in this movie!

Yeah, I remember renting this movie in 1991 when I was going through a rough patch. Jesus, how I laughed - and had to rent it 3 more times that month!

I always remember the scene where he sees the shrink who says something like, "When I meet an alcoholic the first thing I tell him is to stop drinking." The look on Ritter's face is priceless! So obvious but so impossible at the time for the drinker.

I would rate this one at least a 7.5 out of 10. Just my opinion.

All I can say is, I rented it, and I don't remember laughing one time. For all John Ritter may have said about wanting to change his image, he didn't change it at all. (The aerobics scene was all too Jack-Tripper-esque.) The glow in the dark condom scene would only have been funny if you didn't know it was coming, and most viewers did.

As it stood, the film was already built around an unsympathetic character (nothing new for director Blake Edwards), but this one just wasn't endearing enough--and neither were the women. Finally, the ending IMO did not have a ring of truth or plausility to it. It went out like a wet noodle.

And that's just as a stand-alone film. When you compare it to 10 (or even That's Life) it really pales! (His subsequent film, Switch was funnier as well--in a guilty pleasure sort of way that Skin Deep wasn't.)

The best thing about it was the song.

I thought the movie was all right because I rented it and all but it has been ages since I have seen it though. I remember USA Network use to show this a lot at one time.

They might have possibly shown it on USA UP ALL NIGHT on a Friday or Saturday night. I could be mistaken about that though. I have always been a fan of John Ritter ever since I first saw him do Three's Company.

I mainly watched the movie due to the women in it because they were all pretty hot you know.

Dedicated to USA UP ALL NIGHT and the fans of the show! http://deefilmroll.com/usa-uan/
