Californication

When I first happened on this movie w/the late great John Ritter late one night on cable I was stunned to realize that this was the exact plot as Californication.

Yes there are quite a few similarities between the two. But 'Skin Deep' imo is a much more enjoyable experience with it's steady combination of great fun and sweet sense of melancholy running throughout the whole film. 'Californication' simply became much too repetitive for it's own good with many of it's storylines bordering on the pedistrian with some really unnecessary and unimaginative plotlines thrown lazily into the mix(particularly the whole tired rap/hip-hop angle that was used throughout one of it's various seasons). But this I suppose was only natural considering the fact that it was an entire series and not a single film as 'Skin Deep' is. Not to mention that I find Ritter's character in 'Skin Deep' to be a much more endearing, sad and ultimately a more likable individual than Duchovny's character in 'Californication' ever was.

In the end I'd take watching Zach Hutton over Hank Moody anyday of the week.
