I think it was. It was unfairly panned at the time of release but I really enjoyed it. No doubt if it had done as well as Nightmare on Elm Street it would have had a long line of sequels.
shareI saw this movie when I was 8 or 9. I think it is better than the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. It's still freaks me out to watch it, whereas, Nightmare on Elm Street just makes me laugh. I love Peter Berg in everything I've seen him in or direct. The murder scene from Alison's murder is so creepy, all of that blood. The time Jonathan sees Alison in that lake and she's floating to him, so creepy.

I first saw this movie when I was 17 and LOVED it, I just saw it again for the first time since then and............GEEZ IT SUCKED. Yes I watched the entire movie and still liked parts but I failed to recognize how cheezy it all really was. Pinker was a very good villian but the girl friend, coach, and other supporting actors were just plain bad.

I saw this movie once when I was a kid, thought it was cool. Saw it again at 21, still think it's cool. Granted it makes a little less sense to me now than when I was a kid. Of course, the Smurfs and Pee-Wee's Playhouse made sense to me when I was a kid. Oh look there's a talking globe and a chair with a face on it, why am I not frightened?
But anyways, back to the topic, yeah it's definitely one of Craven's best, if for nothing more than the brutality of Alison's murder. And it got me both times I saw it. So compltely unexpected.
Craven's got to be one of the best directors at making you feel the helplessness of his victims. Like how in Scream, the mother can hear her daughter getting murdered ruthlessly over the cordless phone, but of course can do nothing about it. And in Scream 2, when Jaime Kennedy (the most likeable character in the series) gets dragged into a car, and no one can hear his screams because of the loud boombox being played conveniently outside.

I just saw this movie again since 1989. This movie was worse then I remembered. At least there wer a few laughs. When Horance went into the little girl was funny. When they jumped into the TV running past the Cleaver family, I almost lost it. The more I think about it, its so bad its good.

Pinker is easily one of cravens best thought up maniacs. Mitch pileggi played him down to the bone and had some of the best in your face piss taking i have seen from most of cravens films. I was suprised to see that in the book there was a lot of parts that didn't make it into the film, that would have made it a hell of a lot more gory and shown pinker as an even more sick and twisted individual. It is a good horror with some great sick humour, but the effects look very dated now, even so i think that they would give the one's in cursed a big run for their money.

I remember the first time I saw this flick I was 11 and I was captivated... seen it a few times since and it was even on HBO this evening. What a RAWK AZZ film! Toltally weak ending (what, is Jonathan supposed to never watch TV again?!? Did he have to wait for TiVo?) Let us not forget the cheeze hair metal music matched with the inter-station TV romp feat. John Tesh close to the end. What's not to love?
shareI'm shocked to see that so many people love this movie. I thought it was aweful...even worse than Deadly Friend in some ways. The acting was all horrible, the effects were shot (well, I guess I do have to cosnider that the movie is pretty old - I can't expect it to look like LOTR), the attempts at "comedy" and "social satire," especially the Televangelist scene were pathetic and obvious -- it was like someone's school teacher imitating the Church Lady 2 years after everyone knew all the jokes, and you're sitting there in class groaning while the two dorkiest kids laugh.
They even managed to get good musical talent to make bad songs for this movie.... Come on, you get Megadeth during their prime, and all they do is remake an old Alice Cooper song VERY BADLY - they could have either used the excellent original song, or for god sakes, some kick ass speed metal that was all the rage at the time.
Also, every action and motivation of every single character was so completely out of touch with how a real human being would act, that I wonder what Wes Craven was thinking when he wrote this. This was the guy responsible for Last House on the Left and the original Nightmare on Elm Street. What happened?
I bet a better movie could be made with know-it-all college film students behind the cameras, extras from local small town furniture commercials as the actors, me with Photoshop one frame at a time on special effects, and Trixter w/Kenny G for the score.

Thanks to it being easier and cheaper than ever before for amateurs to make films there are literally hundreds if not thousands of low budge horror flicks coming out every year and 90% of them based on my experience are complete garbage and make Shocker look like The Shining in comparison. Netflix is loaded with these films and they can be really hard to spot until you start watching them. I usually don't pay a lot of attention to ratings but I had to start doing it with newer horror films with unknown actors and directors. Now if a horror film is rated 1 out of 5 stars or something I'll avoid it unless i happen to be in one of those moods where i want to watch a bad movie.
