help needed from Shirley Valentine fans!!!

Hi!

I'm Kirz, I'm 18 and I'm studying Shirley Valentine in English at the moment. I loved the playscript; witty, funny, insightful ... unfortunately I didn't find the movie anywhere near that good. I won't go into reasons, I don't want to insult anyone, I just wanted to know what specific aspects of the film you guys liked so much and what made it an effective film for you?

If someone could get back to me soon about this it would be great. :)

Thanks,
- Kirz

hey Kirz,
Its a feelgood film. I think thats why most people enjoy it.

I love the scene where shirley hangs out the window yelling at her daughter - "Thats right sex for breakfast, sex for lunch and sex for dinner- havent you heard of it? Its called the F-plan"

The casting was fantastic in this film also. Its amazing how just by changing one actor can change the whole dynamic of the film. For example, who else could have been cast as the adult Marjorie Majors?

I can relate to Shirley in a few ways and this is why I enjoy the film so much.

I would be interested to know why you were so disappointed with it.

Shelves in the closet? Happy thought indeed!

Hey Kirz,
What I liked the most about the movie was that, like everyone else, it was a feel good film. The cast are great and, no offence to southeners, but it's nice to see a really good movie about people from Liverpool. I'm originally from Liverpool and found it very amusing. I also agree with the fact that she's a real woman, not really skinny.

Hi! Kirz, Sorry I'm a tad late responding to you, but just now saw your post. I must say, I admire you for wanting some insight to the movie, rather than just blowing it off. At your young age I understand how you may be "puzzled"? by the theme, and I do hope you never have the same feelings that Shirley Valentine did. Remember her lines in the movie; "why do I have such a small life when I'm given all these feelings"? When you get to be 50 or 60 this will hit you very hard, perhaps moreso for a woman. Please don't give up on the movie, watch it again as you grow up and it will become more and more real to you. Good luck to you.

Well said.

Kirz...I see you're only 18...give yourself another 10-15 years, then watch it again..then you'll understand why so many women on this thread love this film..it's the story of a happy marriage gone sour..and Shirley's effort to revitalize her life before it's too late.

I realise this post is very old but as a fellow youngster (at the tender age of 19) i would like to add my 2 pense! I love this film and have from a very young age. iv had a copy that i watched from before i was 10 and even then there was something about that film that i loved although it wasnt until later years i even realised the real message. I feel it's something to do with being a woman and the feelings that we have of being ignored and unappreciated and feeling worthless and the thought that she can bounce back from that gives people hope, even if you dont change your ways or run of to greece its the knowleadge that it can be done. I just love the movie there is something heart warming and very real about it which other films lack and im sure the older i get the more and more i will appeciate it.
