It's "The Girl Who Used to be Me" performed by Patti Austin. It's available on her "Love is Gonna Getcha" album.

but that is not the song.

The girl that used to be me is not the song in the opening.
It is shirley valentine....or something.
Does anyone know the title?

No, the opening song has been correctly identified. A chorus sings a few words in the introduction part of the song before Patti Austin starts, as italicized below:
"THE GIRL WHO USED TO BE ME"
Music by Marvin Hamlisch
Lyrics by Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman
Performed by Patti Austin

It was always "Sit down Shirley Valentine",
"Go away Shirley Valentine."
And one day Shirley Valentine...
Just wasn't there anymore.

A bird is born to fly, born for the moment
It takes to the sky, and all it's dreams
Are riding on it's wings.

But what if it falls, the dreams aren't broken
As long as the wind is fair, the sky is always there.
Oh, the girl who used to be me.
She could fly, she was free,

And she wrote all the words to her song.
Yes the girl who used to be me,
Used to go dancing.
And I feel she's been gone too long.
I'd like the chance to be
The girl who used to be me.

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

I vaguely remember seeing the movie & hearing this song as the opening song. I have Patti Austin's CD & have one question (not really related to the movie...apologies): What does Patti Austin sing as the song ends? Right after she sings the last line (I'd like a chance to be the girl who used to be me...), she sings something that's unintelligible to me. Any help? I know that the album version may be different from the version used in the movie. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Just listened to it on YouTube and couldn’t make it out. ‘Just a star’?

The song on Patti's album is ok but I wish the film version was available somewhere. I guess I'll have to make do with listening to it on YouTube. Such a lovely, thoughtful song that should have won the Oscar that year:
