Does anything think Shirley Valentine ends up in Greece?

I just feel the holiday is good for her, I don't think she stays. Anyone agree?

I think that depends on Joe. What his son said to him, about becoming a 'boring b@stard', has struck home. He knows he can't be without Shirley, he's got to prove to her that she'll be happier with him. They may reignite what was once there; you can make up your own ending. Personally, I think she will go back. Joe's not a bad bloke and he'll never take her for granted again if she does go back.

When this first came out, a colleague of my brother, was so moved by the film, she ferked off and never went back. She left her teaching job on Tyneside and went to teach abroad.

It struck quite a chord with the 40 somethings at the time.

I think she goes home. As someone pointed out in another thread, everything shuts down during the winter on that island.

But more important, after being there for a little longer, she would have realized that her change of perspective didn't come from Greece, it came from within; it's just that being in Greece helped her find it. The scenes of her shopping and waiting tables on the island after she decided to stay are very telling. Most everything she does is exactly what she did at hime: shopping for produce, waiting on people, making chips and egg. It's what she did with her time off that was different. She went to the beach, and spent time taking in natural beauty. What she learned through her Greek isle experience she will be able to carry with her anywhere, including back home in Liverpool.

There are several hints in the film that Joe is equally unhappy as Shirley. His son even tells him, "You used to be fun, you used to laugh." By the time Joe arrived on the island, I think Shirley had realized this. That's why she placed two chairs and two glasses at the table by the sea. She wanted to give him a chance to find what she had found.

I like to think that Shirley and Joe returned to England together, reawakened to possibilities, and filled with energy and ambition to seize moments and enjoy life. I can picture them eating "tea" al fresco, overlooking the water, or perhaps even on a boat. I also think they would save their money so they might go away each year on holiday together.

perhaps her husband took early retirement and they bought a villa there or something - property is much cheaper in greece than in England.

I think she stays. She feels affection for Joe but she is not the same woman who left the UK. The marriage has gone stale, as some marriages do, and sometimes it's hard to go back. When she says: "I was the wife, I was the mother ..." that's in the past tense. She's her own person again and there's no going back. Good for her. She has left her "little life" behind.

And no, I don't t believe Scarlett gets Rhett back either. In both cases, it's in the context clues the authors give the reader.
