This sad thing is that the dvd is not the real movie. The dvd is the MGM version and the HBO version is alot better. I have yet to find the HBO one on dvd.

I love it too. It's one of my favorite movies. But it's soo underrated. You can turn on your t.v. set and you can see movies like Grease and Back to the future about 15X a year but you almost never see Shag. If it weren't for my aunt taking me to see it back in 1989. I probably wouldn't know it existed.

I saw this over 20 times at the movie theater when it came out, but I've never seen it on T.V. I have the VHS tape of it, but not the DVD yet. How is the HBO version different? Just curious -- this is one of my all-time fave movies. It portrays the innocence and the atmosphere of the early '60's very realistically; almost like it was made then instead of the late '80's.

Being from Charleston, SC my friends and I were all over this movie while it was being filmed and as soon as it came out. It was actually filmed in like late 1987 but was not released until summer 1989 for some reason. I know this bc I remember reading where Scott Coffey said as soon as he filmed Satisfaction in Charleston in 1987 he drove immediately up to Myrtle Beach to film Shag. Anyway, since I followed the movie closely, I made sure to tape it off HBO and then I bought the VHS copy and eventually the DVD. I need to go back and watch each version again to be sure but I'm almost 100% positive that the HBO version is the real deal with the original music but the VHS version has the different songs in some scenes but then the dvd put the original (good) music back in.

This has to be one of my most favorite movies of all time. I've probably watched it 50 times or more. And my copy is the MGM version on VHS tape. The HBO version must be really fantastic. I've been gradually finding all the songs from both versions of the movie. The only impossible song to find is the Jakki O song.

~ I luv this movie too. It's one of my favorites movies. They used to give it alot during the early 90's in HBO. I even recorded so I could have it, but I whined up watching it as crazy entill the tape broke. Now I recently bought the DVD. Now I could enjoy again. Luckily too b/c I barely see Shag on television.

I love this movie too...used to have it on tape VHS and play it all the time. It's so much fun to watch; makes me want to go to Myrtle Beach.

Me too! There should be a Shag Myrtle Beach Party once a year.

I love this movie. Reminds me of the old Myrtle Beach of my youth and all the good times. I want to go to the beach every time I see it!

Definitely one of my all time favorites. Me and my sis used to rent this on VHS all the time when we were young. Own it on DVD today and even though the music is slightly different than the version I used to watch, it's still a lot of fun to see. As long as the Stagger Lee song is on there it's ok by me.
Another one of my all time favorites in the same genre is Peggy Sue Got Married. Maybe it's something about 80s movies in the early 60's that fascinates me.
