Myrtle Beach Pavilion comes to an end

I grew up in Myrtle Beach and I remember the summer of 87 when Shag was filming. Phoebe Cates actually came into the movie theater where I worked an bought popcorn as I was cleaning up after the movies began. "Buzz and Chip" also came in, but did not buy anything. Bridgette Fonda was driving the car, a red ford mustang. It was not the car they are shown driving in the movie, because the mustang did not come out until 64.

There are only a few shots of the pavilion in the background as the girls cruise down ocean boulevard. And there is a scene where Carson gets sick on a ride. It might have been said that this was the Pavilion in the movie. But I think the scene was actually filmed down the road at The Family Kingdom Amusement Park. After 58 years the Pavilion has officially closed down and will be redeveloped. Saturday September 30 was its final day. Anyone interested in the story or some pics of it can go to myrtlebeachonline.com ,the story is on the front page.

Thanks for the memories Pavilion, we will miss you....

We spent summers at Myrtle Beach (still do) and I was SO sad to hear the Pavilion was closing down! I think it's part of MB history and was really upset to learn about it...

Yeah I quit taking my family to Myrtle Beach because of them tearing down the Pavillion.

I grew up about 2 hours from Myrtle Beach in NC. My buddies and I used to go there quite frequently. THen I got married and would take my family there. But, no more. As far as I'm concerened, when they tore down the Pavillion, they tore down Myrtle Beach.

Those damned developers and the money hungry planning board!

I tried everything in my power to make them stop tearing the Pavilion down but to no avail. It is depressing that the Staple of Myrtle Beach is gone. They might as well tear down the Statue Of Liberty. I am angry it took this long to get a response out of the public that could have done something. It was on the national historic deed... and it is against the law to distory a registered structure. Money Talks. Which brings to question... why do they need more hotels.. if they r going to take away the reasons for going.....? Its an old saying but- Duh.

the red car they were driving in the movie was a Cadillac...lol...not to easily mistaken for a mustang...it is sad though about the Pavillion went to MB last year for the first time in about 10 years and it was nowhere near the same, condo's and outlets, can't they let a few places alone?

reply

I was not referring to the car they drove in the movie. Off camera, they drove around in a red mustang. That is what pulled up in front of the theater.

Sorry, misread your post....

Well, so sorry to see it go. My band (One Night Stand) used to play there, and at the Beach Club down the road (run by Beach Club promotions--Cecil Corbett, who is also now gone), and we loved it. As most know, the downstairs was for games and fun, the upstairs was for dancing to live music. We loved playing there as we got to live in a cheap motel for the week(s) we were there and hang out at the beach during the day chasing the ladies. We were all in college and had so much fun during those summer weeks.

One thing people may remember is that the Pavilion was where the kids used to drive by over and over in their "cool" cars with Confederate flags draped across the trunk...it was a different time in the world, to say the least.

Sorry to see it go...many memories for everyone who went there.

Cheers!
