cLaRiFiCaTiOn! Original/HBO/VHS/DVD/CD versions

After much research and many thanks to some reviewers on Amazon I think I finally have all the answers at least to the question about the movie "Shag" in regard to the music...

It basically all boils down to which version you originally saw or what you "grew up on" so to speak. If you have been a fan of this movie since it appeared in 1989 then you are probably familiar with the movie through its airing on HBO. They aired the original theatrical version back in 1989 with the original songs. I read that someone who was in the movie as an extra said that when the movie was first released on video not all the original songs were cleared for use so bc of licensing issues video stores were asked to pull the videos. They were then replaced with an altered version that contained about 5 or 6 different songs that did not appear in the original movie. So if you are familiar with the movie by having watched it on HBO or possibly one of the very early videos then you are used to one version. If you are used to watching the altered video version then you are used to the alternate songs. The motion picture soundtrack on tape and cd features the original soundtrack tunes. One way to tell if you have the original or the altered is by listening to the opening tune playing while the credits appear. If you hear "The Shag" song then you are watching the original version. If you hear "Mama Said" you are watching the alternate version. The original version also contains songs by Chris Isaak and kd Lang but these songs were left out of the alternate video version. Later when the movie was released on dvd the original songs that had been taken out were put back in. This was great for those of us who were used to the HBO (original) version but not so great for those who had become used to the alternate vhs version. It is a shame that the dvd is out of print. It would be awesome if someone would re-distribute this film in both versions so people could have the songs they know and love. So to sum up: original theatrical version=HBO version= DVD version= CD soundtrack songs= "old" ***AND*** alternate version= VHS version= "new" The other post here where someone listed all the songs played during every scene in each of the versions is very helpful if you want the songs.

Thank you!!! When I was 11 my best friend and I rented the original VHS and she recorded it for me. Years later I had lost the copy she made for me so I bought the VHS and was totally confused about the music. I enjoy it anyways, but it's a little odd, even years and years later. I was rewatching it yesterday, but my VHS copy is getting totally worn out so my husband decided to try and buy it off amazon. We were a bit confused as to which version was the original.

There is a 3DVD set that has Shag, The Man in the Moon, and The Cutting Edge (all movies I loved back in the day, score!), so that was what the hubs bought me. I'm guessing it will have the original soundtrack, but we'll see!

yeah the dvd should have the original music as heard in the movie as well as the "version" they played on HBO.

I just bought a used Dvd. The opening song is the Shag theme. Crossing my fingers I hear “Stagger Lee” during the Shag contest (or was it practice?).
