Compare

How does this movie compare with "Where the Boys Are" and "Where the Boys are 1984"? I haven't seen "Shag" and wondered if it was worth watching since there are similar themes.

PS I absolutely love Annabeth Gish. :)

I love both of those movies - actually all three including Shag. I wish "Where The Boys Are '84" would get a Blu-Ray release - if not just DVD.

I'd like to see "84" again, but yeah, no DvD. . .yet.

To answer your question, these are all fun movies. Where The Boys Are 84 is much more sexual than Shag or the original WTBA...it also has more adult themes (though WTBA does have the serious rape theme).

Dammit Carol Sue, where is the vodka?!

reply

The original WTBA was very forward for it's time, but what I got out of it was that an innocent, inexperienced girl didn't know how to handle intimacy. She didn't realize that she was nothing more than a play toy to all those boys. She didn't have the maturity and experience and yes, ended up getting raped. Still, it was a fun movie over all. (Wow, that sounds strange now that I've typed it.)

Shag is worth seeing if you like chick-flicks that are cute and sweet and innocent but nothing earth-shattering. If you like movies like Dirty Dancing then this you might like. The music is fun too. The accents are fake- no one talks like that except Julia Roberts in her Southern films. I like movies that are set in older "more innocent" times like before Kennedy was shot in the 60's. This movie takes place in Myrtle Beach SC in the summer of 1963.

I hope it's on Netflix or Amazon. I'll check now. Thanks.

I'm not sure about Netflix but Amazon only has used copies that are very expensive since Shag is now out of print. It would be nice if someone either posted the movie in its entirety on Youtube or made some bootleg copies to sell for cheap. I guess that's illegal but what do they expect fans to do when this movie is out of print but still in demand?! I've gotten some very decent bootleg copies of out-of-print movies and was thankful to have them. I'd copy the movie myself since I have all versions and get it out to fans who want it but I don't have the technology or the skill to do so...
ps- if you like Annabeth Gish (I like her too) she was great in Hiding Out as well as Mystic Pizza. Also- Satisfaction and The In Crowd (1988) are some more good ones if you like those types of movies.

reply

Yes, Annabeth Gish was great in Hiding Out and Mystic Pizza. She was also in Desert Bloom, one of my favorites. I have not seen the other two movies you mentioned. Anyway, if I was going to get a bootleg copy of any movie, it would be Wallflower (1948). I was almost to the end of that movie, on TV years ago, when there was some major announcement, breaking news or something and I missed the last ten minutes or so. I'd never seen it before or since.

Have a safe week! :)

I have not seen Desert Bloom but I just remembered Annabeth Gish was in The Last Supper which I really liked. She is an underrated actress. I have not seen Wallflower but I like old movies.

Take care! :-)

I don't see how this is a more "innocent" time. The entire movie is guys trying to get the girls to sleep with them and it ends with a huge party where they all get wasted.
