First of all, has ANYBODY ever heard of a girl actually having that name? I loved it as a kid because it sounded so neat and it did seem so rare, everywhere you turned around there were all these Melanies, but no Melainas.

It was probably originally Melanie, but she changed a few letters around just to
make it stand out. Like the character Dawn in the 1976 version of King Kong who changes the letter in her name to spell "Dwan," so it would be more distinctive and give her more attention as an aspiring actress.

Melaina is a real name. It is the name of a nymph out of Greek mythology. And I don't think her own father would be calling her Melaina if her name was really Melanie.

I've never seen that name either. This past year, one of my students had that name! So it does exist.
