They're all likeable characters. But Pudge is my favourite, too.

Sure, Pudge is so likeable and naturally I liked her, too. She would be the kind of person I would like in REAL life.

However, my favorite of the girls in SHAG is Melaina. I thought she was so funny and quirky and sexy. So for someone interesting to watch in the movie she is really my favorite.

reply

Buckaroo, I think that you prefer Melaina because you're a guy with a penchant for Bridget Fonda! Just a guess. PLEASE don't be offended if I'm completely wrong!

Sure, Melaina is wild and fun and usually up to some kind of mischief that warrants a scolding from Luanne. She's rebellious. And why wouldn't she be? She's a preacher's daughter! Anyway, I like Melaina. She's just the only one of the four that I can't quite RELATE to. I wouldn't really feel comfortable raiding an elder's closet without permission. And I don't know if I'd run off with white trash like Big Bob only to get left like a dog on the highway. I'd rather meet a nice boy like Chip. I guess that's why I'm for Pudge. She's sort of sweet and innocent. But she's not about to try and spoil anyone's fun or interfere with their plans. She's not uptight or bossy. She just wants to shag the night away and have a good time. I love the way she gets sassy with Nadine while she's dancing with Buzz at the Pavilion. She's got moxie, too!

Yes - and no.

Yes - because I am indeed a guy and I like Fonda a lot.

No - because I don't like her as much in this movie as I do in several of her other movies (such as "Camilla", "No Ordinary Baby" (aka "After Amy"), "Single White Female", "Jackie Browne" etc.) This movie is not one of her best - bikini scenes or not! I had more fun watching her in the navy style bathing SUIT than her bikini scenes. Please don't make us guys worse than we are! So yes, Melaina was my favourite, but not just because she was played by Bridget Fonda! I actually hated her much too bleeched hair and some of her behaviour, etc. And yes, I would not like to think of her destiny going away with that manager, either. I just thought Melaina was a fun character to watch. She was such a mixture of a wild and crazy person, and at the same time also quite restricted (she was a giggling little girl when Carson came back from the boat - not the femme fatale she had tried to play the previous evening). I laughed a lot, and I don't want you to imagine I was just sitting there staring at a beautiful actress.

I had the impression that the original question was who our FAVOURITE was. Not necessarily whom we would IDENTIFY with. As a guy, I would probably identify with a guy like Chip.

I like most of the characters in this movie. Even the minor characters, such as the people at the wild party, and I thought the house keeper (who was "not fuzzy") was great as well. It is a classic for me, and that's one of the reasons why I keep coming back to this message board!

reply

Hey, please don't be too hard on us men, who write comments here :-)
I would say I am at LEAST as enthusiastic about Bridget Fonda as Buckaroo probably is, and that is the main reason why I first watched SHAG. However, I immediately loved the movie, because of the music, because of the whole early 60s atmosphere, etc. Yes, Fonda was fun to watch in this movie, but I prefer the kind of character she plays in "Singles", "After Amy" or "Bodies, Rest & Motion". (In case you don't know these movies, her characters in them are all more everyday characters, but sympathetic, independent women, in my opinion).

My favorite SHAG main character is Luanne!

I think she is just so funny to watch. Some people have said she overplayed the character so she came out as a parody, but I don't mind.
The other three girls are characters who remind me much more of people I know (or knew) in real life. I definitely don't know anyone reminding me of Luanne, so for me she was a lot of fun to watch.

Of the men I sort of liked Jimmy Valentine. He was a bit too much. Especially when he goes into "star mode". And I definitely don't identify with him. I just think he was funny.

reply

I think that Page Hannah did a good job in Shag. I actually think that she's a better actress than her sister and I used to be a huge Daryl Hannah fan!

Buckaroo, please ask yourself how many Bridget Fonda discussions you have participated in. Or at least review your first post on this subject. When you tell us that you find Melaina 'sexy', it sort of implies that:

1.) You're probably a man

2.) You probably fancy Bridget Fonda

Why have I offended you by assuming that your preference for a particular character is based on the fact that you're a bloke? I should have realised making an assumption like that could get feathers ruffled. I am sorry for my audacity. I MEANT NO HARM!

reply

The only reason why I am a little "offended" is because you don't seem to take me seriously!

I never denied I like Fonda VERY much! Not just her looks. She is funny, versatile, smart and classy, and a lot of other things.

BUT, if I want to lean back and have my eyes pop out by her beauty (just to play along with your prejudice here), I'll watch "Camilla", or "Bodies, Rest & Motion" or something like that. In "Shag" I simply found her character FUNNY, so she was the one I singled out. What is wrong with that? I feel you are suggesting I mentioned Melaina just because I generally like Fonda. I was talking about finding a CHARACTER a little weird and wild and funny to watch for me.

I find that as good a reason as choosing someone simply because she was most like yourself, someone you could identify with. As a man, that's a little hard, since the original question in this thread was which of the GIRLS was our fave.

reply

This is really getting silly. When jodieandglenn began this discussion, she wrote that her favourite of the three girls is Pudge. She went on to say how much she IDENTIFIES with that character. I wrote to say that my favourite is also Pudge; but that they are all likeable characters. Then you wrote to say that Pudge is someone you could like and be friends with in real life. However, you find Melaina to be funny and quirky and sexy and interesting to watch. For these reasons, you say you prefer that character. It is also clear that you like Bridget Fonda a lot as an actress. What is wrong with me suggesting that you prefer Melaina because you 'generally like Fonda'?!?! You have reiterated your thoughts in that last post. You find her funny, versatile, smart, classy, and a lot of other things. If you prefer Melaina because you think that Bridget Fonda is a brilliant actress, why try to deny it? I really don't see anything wrong with singling out a character in a film because of an enthusiasm for a particular actor/actress (I'm 'guilty' of that myself!!!!). It does not mean that the viewer has no intellect or cannot watch the film properly without drooling all over the place! Anyway, I wrongly assumed that Melaina is your favourite because you're a fan of Bridget. And once again, I am sorry that this has offended you.

You refer to my 'prejudice' and seem to think that I am some kind of bully, a man basher. I'm nothing of the sort! If you want to be taken seriously, please accept my apology now. I am not going to sit here and argue with complete strangers over a movie that I love to bits.

Why would I want to do that?

reply

Hmmmm?

I think it all really depends om how we interpret the original question. As in
1) who would you identify with or like most in real life, or
2) who is the most interesting to watch in the movie.
Often these two things are definitely not the same!

I can definitely identify most with Pudge. And if I knew anyone in real life like these four girls, she'd definitely be the one I'd like to be friends with.

However, when it comes to watching a movie like this one (for me that means pure entertainment, not a lot of serious stuff to think about afterwards - I'll save that for "Der Untergang" or movies in that category!) and picking a favourite character, my choice would be between

Luanne, Melaina and Chip (in that order).

I found them the most entertaining along with a few of the minor characters, such as the crazy guy in the straw hat (or whatever it was he was wearing in the beginning of the movie, when he was dancing). In real life, I'd probably not really want to get to know any of them with the exception of Chip.

Just for the record: I am a WOMAN, and I am also one of those movie buffs who like Bridget. However, I can destinguish between real life and fiction, and Fonda, herself, and her characters, including Melaina!

You know, AKIronside, you stated that because Buckaroo3 refered to Melaina as being sexy, it proves that he is a guy. First of all, his words were "funny and quirky and sexy" - not just "sexy". And I (a woman) actually found Melaina's character sexy, as well!

reply

I said 'sort of' and 'probably'. I wasn't ruling anything out. The offending remark was said lightheartedly. I would never deliberately insult someone.

And yes, I do realise that he is also aware of her acting ability.

I hesitated to reply again....as I do not wish to make it seem as if I want to be a hair splitter. I just wish to clarify something, that's all.

Someone wrote about me:
"What is wrong with me suggesting that you prefer Melaina because you 'generally like Fonda'?!?! "

I think it is the other way around, really. I love this movie, and it was one of the first I watched Fonda in. So I started to like her and follow her career because I really liked the way she played the character in THIS movie.

Also, believe me, I do not imagine Bridget is anything like this in real life.

reply

Ok, so the discussion got off topic here maybe - but to be honest I do understand why Buckaroo3 felt the need to explain himself.

What I don't understand is that we have two guys who named their favorite character: Buckaroo named Melaina and Morten named Luanne. For some reason only Buckaroo's choice was questioned. That leaves me guessing whether it is because the other people here also like Luanne but not Melaina, or whether it is because Buckaroo named a character which a lot of people [maybe especially men?????] would find beautiful, whereas Morten picked a character who at least in this particular movie is not portrayed as a beautiful sex bomb. No disrespect to Page Hannah whatsoever - I love her, and she was great in "Fame", "Racing With the Moon" as well as this movie, but Luanne was not supposed to be "beautiful" (at least on the outside) in "Shag". Does that make Buckaroo a little chauvenistic (I know that word was never used, that is just my interpretation) and not Morten? I don't get it.

We all have our favorite characters and our favorite actors. Sometimes it's hard to explain why - let alone try to justify it.

But to get back on the subject:
My favorite in this movie is also PUDGE.

But all four girls are great. The interesting part for me is that they are so DIFFERENT. I would have been a boring movie with four almost identical main characters, no matter how great they were.

reply

My favorite is a tie between Pudge and Melaina... I can relate to both, believe it or not! I wear eyeliner and love to shag, what can I say?

How can you leave the past behind when it keeps finding ways to get to your heart?

reply

Buckaroo,

I just wanted to say that I hope our little misunderstanding has not put you off coming to this discussion board! It really wasn't my intention to offend you or anyone.

Shag is basically a 'chick' movie. So, it is refreshing to know that there are men who appreciate it as I do. I was not really aware of this till I saw your posts and a few others by men on this board!

I really am interested in men's thoughts on this film, its characters, the music, etc. I'm sure that I speak for all the other women on here.

I'm still here, and not the least offended. I changed the name in my ID. The other one probably gave some people the idea I was some kind of a redneck or whatever... Now I use my own name.

Just posted on another thread of the message board for "Shag" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098300/board/flat/26841621

I'll try to get back later with some comments on why I like this movie. I can't speak on the behalf of men ... just for myself! :)

[deleted]

She was my favorite too! Next is Pudge, then Carson, and then Luanne.

reply

[deleted]

Melaina, undoubtedly. She's got somewhat of a good attitude, "and if you're not, there's always divorce", I loved that since I was 9.

I also like Pudge, but she's a little too goody-two-shoes for me, my mother likes her though.

reply

Love Pudge, she's a real sweetie.

I got the movie because of my fondness for Phoebe Cates, and she looks as wonderful as ever, but her character wasn't all that likeable... and I wasn't keen on Buzz.

reply

Gotta be pudge and then a close second is carson. i just think she is so classy.

reply

Pudge because she's the most realistic, and gets the nice guy, Chip!

... I admire a person that's willing to do whatever is necessary.

reply

1. Melaina
2. Pudge
3. Luanne
4. Carson

Melaina has the best lines... "Haven't I seen you somewhere before?"
"Maybe in one of your better dreams."

reply

I would have to say Pudge. I've been an Annabeth fan since I saw her in Mystic Pizza. While I also like Bridget (Aria) Fonda and Phoebe (Ridgemont High) Cates, Annabeth is my favorite. The character of Pudge is someone I would want to hang out with in real life, and go Shaggin' (dancing) with!

Melaina.

She reminds me of a girl I met in a club @ Myrtle Beach when I was stationed there in the Air Force during the early 1970s (1973/1974). Was 18 when I arrived there and spent two great summers on the beach before moving on to Germany

reply

Pudge, definitely. My sister called me Pudge for my whole life, but I didn't know why until she showed me the movie when I was 10. I'm 19 now and it is still my favorite.

reply

Melaina, she is fun, sexy and ambitious. Also she wants to be an actress, I have wanted to be an actress since I was a little girl so back in 1989(I was 7) she was my favourite and now that I am persuing my acting career shje is still my fave!!! I can relate to her, not a preacher's daughter but I had a very strict catholic upbringing so without some sneaking around I would have lead a dull highschool life.

reply

Previously admitted: Annabeth Gish makes my knees weak. There it's on the table . . .

Trying to avoid 'gushing' about her, I will just say: Pudge, without a doubt! She is THE one of the four that I would find approachable if I were, say, going to school with them.

Melaina would be too forward for me, Carson too prudish (although she changed), Luanne . . . c'mon a SENATOR'S daughter, that big of a play wasn't even in my book in high school. But ALL of them good characters in the movie IMO.

reply

Melaina (Bridget Fonda also gives the best performance)

reply

Definitely Pudge! Annabeth was so pretty then. Carson would be my next choice, though. Pheobe Cates is beautiful and just adorable.....even today; she's timeless.

Sometimes a being a bitch is all a woman has to hold onto.

reply

Definitely Pudge, she has been my favorite ever since I first saw this movie, when I was a little girl

reply

i couldn't relate to carson since i didn't have size 6 shoes then or wasn't the beauty queen and melania was too wild and the redhead too dorky. so pudge. she was the most relatable. and annabeth did look her best there with a nice round face. now she's too skinny and gaunt. she was perfect then. love her.

reply

Hmm..I'd have to say it was a tie between Pudge and Luanne. Pudge was so sweet and good-natured, but she also had backbone (the way she talked backed to that girl when she was dancing with Buzz). She was a nice person but not the type to just be pushed around. I could most identify with her. Luanne was so uptight that she was hilarious. All the strict rules she spouted off when the first arrived at the house, etc. She and Harley made the perfect couple. They were both nice but extremely uptight. IMHO, they were perfect for each other.

reply

Phoebe Cates, duh! One of the most gorgeous woman ever set on earth. All the girls were adorable though, especially Pudge! She was so sweet! Cates and Fonda acted together again in 93's "Bodies, Rest and Motion" an equally unseen and good film.
Phoebe's hair was hilarious here though!

reply

Pudge is my favorite- I loved her big moment at the dance contest. She was adorable! I thought it was cute when she and Chip were talking about kissing, and she said, "Boys don't think of me like that." She was very inexperienced with guys and it was hilarious seeing what happened when she took Melaina's advice!

Melaina cracked me up throughout the movie and I could definitely relate to her. She couldn't depend on her parents or a marriage to give her a future, so she decided to do whatever it took to "make it". "I WANT my bikini."

Carson is exactly like my younger sister. She has a dry sense of humor and her own complicated set of standards for herself. She's also sheltered and almost prissy at times, like Carson. I laugh every time when she says, "Kindly, put your shirt back on."

Luanne is the least like me and my least favorite. She is funny in most of her scenes and is definitely the perfect woman for Harley though.

Carson is my favorite, next would be Melaina.

How about a F, marry, kill?
Mine would be: F Melania, marry Pudge or Carson (tough call), and kill Luanne. How bout y'all? LOL
