When I was real little and saw it, I thought they were gold coins, now I look at it, and I thought they were chips. Whatever they were, there sure were a lot of them, and they must've been pretty strong for only a few to break in that fall.

Every time you read this signature, an orphaned puppy gets fed into a meat grinder.
It makes sense that they would be crackers, but I am guessing that they are cookies. They kinda reacted like they ate a dessert. If they had the time, they would have probably eaten the entire box!
