Those who watched santa sangre and were in awe of its weirdness and brilliance at the same time, come forward to suggest more films of similar nature, other than Jodorowsky's other films, which are all btw are equally brilliant and recommended for fans of nonsensical/freudian/surrealistic/dreamy/weird (what's the right word?) cinema
I btw also suggest some films of Fellini, Lynch and Takashi Miike (almost everything by him) for similar 'thought provoking' films
yes, GOD YES! my starting point was 'gozu'. if you can handle that, i would next go to 'ichi the killer'. if you haven't left the theatre yet, then: 'full metal yakuza'. next: 'visitor q' next: 'happiness of the katakuris' next: 'the audition' next: 'the bird people of china' next: 'MPD psycho' (tv series)
that's just a suggested progression. it's just a start...
oh, and the 'masters of horror' series episode he did called 'imprint'. if you can't handle the torture issues in 'ichi the killer', don't view this work. brutal. explicit.
I thought `Fight Club' was similar (although if it in terms of stylistically similar films, `Singapore Sling' (listed on IMDB as Singapore sling:O anthropos pou agapise ena ptoma (1990)) or `Tin Drum' (at least the book anyways) might be good ones to see. I'm a little confused why they're are so many japanese films being recommended in regards to santa sangre(although a lot of them are good films, so should be recommended viewing anyways).
I actually found Dollhouse to be the most disturbing of the bunch. I guess it's because the others seem to go so far outside the realm of the possible (as in they take things to the absolute limit), that the brutality becomes almost surreal. I can sort of watch it from a distance. Dollhouse however hits me hard. Every time I finish watching it I cringe, and think "Damn... that poor girl." I find it defintely the most depressing, but I guess it is tamer in that it's much less extravagent.
The first thing i thought of (that hasn't already been mentioned) was Sweet Movie (1974), directed by Dusan Makavejev. I just recently saw that it has come out on DVD in the States.
TCM and Psycho are both very loosely based on the necrophiliac killer Ed Gein as was Deranged and The Silence of the Lambs...
Ed Gein only killed two people but he dug up several dead bodies, made furniture, clothing, and knick-knacks (such as a soup bowl from a skull) from their remains. He was a paranoid schizophrenic who had an overbearing mother and his crimes were committed in the 1950's..
I know...I tried to show the poster above how ridiculous it is to say that Santa Sangre is a remake of Psycho. Santa Sangre is NOT a remake of Psycho more than TCM is a remake of Psycho.
The similarities between Santa Sangre and Psycho is very, very surface. Psycho and TCM have more in common if you ask me.
I think Suspiria by Dario Argento is a pretty good combination of Felliniesque grotesques, Hitchcockian (?) suspense and B movie horror/gore. I'd love to see a double bill of that and Santa Sangre. Some striking similarities and differences.
In a funny sort of way, 5000 fingers of Dr T for the surrealistic style and Funny Games for the hit-you-in-the-stomach reaction. El Topo was much more fun.
