Desperate need of a remake

The story of the life of oscar Romero is a remarkable one. The movie about him is not so remarkable. Other than Julia's performance I would almost say it is a forgetable picture.

I think with a decent budget and formidable director, this can become a movie that could garner mainstream attention.

I disagree. I thought everybody was good, but Julia's performance was so outstanding, I can't think anybody could ever match it. Remakes are seldom as good as the original.

I came here to write virtually the same thing, OP. I found the movie didactic, amateurish and downright unwatchable, despite my respect for the subject matter and the lead actors.

This movie does cry out for a remake by a director of the caliber of a Michael Mann or Ridley Scott. No matter who takes it on, it can hardly be worse than the original. I believe the inflated 7.3 rating for this movie reflects political sympathy for Romero and his cause more than genuine regard for the movie.

Michael Mann or Ridley Scott? You fit the remake crowd...

Raul Julia alone makes this movie beyond outstanding. His depiction of Oscar Romero is possibly the single greatest acting performance in a motion picture ever. For this reason this movie needn't nor cannot be remade. If you want to see such a movie made with Hollywood splash then check out The Mission and in the meantime the stark simplicity with which this film was made will continue to brilliantly illuminate the contrast between the powerful and the weak in El Salvador and the challenge to the Church on how to respond to it. Julia was taken at an early age, but thankfully he was able to give us a performance for the ages.
