Scene With Woman In Kitchen at Father's Home

I think it was the scene at the home of the father of Sylvia Chang's character. The women preparing food at the kitchen sink, who was the mainlander the father was helping out. It looked like that woman had tried to commit suicide...her wrists had scars on them. She said something like "I went along". Did this mean that during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, she gave up suspected people to the government and felt guilt about what she did, so tried to kill herself? That scene was unclear to me. The copy of the DVD I found at a library is old so the sound was not good and the subtitles often did not match the spoken dialogue. Thanks for your help. :-)
