Is this any good?
I was wondering if this is any good. I saw it at Walmart really cheap and it looked ok. And I am a huge fan of 80s flicks so I just wanted to get some feedback. Thanks!
It's Springtime For Hitler Again!

It's Springtime For Hitler Again!
no its crap dont bother
shareIt's not complete crap though. It has its moments but after a while the characters become unlikable and their actions are just far too disrespectful for you to like.
shareIt's not "Crap", but it's not great either. There are plenty of better 80s films. I recommend the novel by Martin Amis over the film
shareI saw this film last night. I thought it was torturously bad. James Spader seemed so out of place. In fact, his character was so vague, he may have accidentally stopped by the wrong set and was in the film by accident.
I didn't read the book, but I imagine if I had I would have been even more disappointed with the film. As is was, I had a hard time sitting through it. I saw it for free and I still want my money back.
James Spader was rubbish in this film, it had nothing to do with him being out of place, he simply gave a poor performance. It really says something that the normally dependable James Spader was outperformed by Dexter Fletcher because the two of them at times seemed to be vying for control of the screeen. Bill Patterson, as another famous face in the film, gave a similarly poor performance. But Jarred Harris and Jonathan Pryce were very good, and made Spader look like an amateur
shareI was at school with Jared and he made this just after he left.
He was 18, it was his first film role and his 21 year old brother Damien was the director.
Mind you their father was Richard Harris and their step-father Rex Harrison so I guess they sort of had it in their blood!!

Good in parts.

This is nicebat, my cyberpet.
"Good in parts"
It's an intriguing film in parts, yes, but it doesn't really recapture the spirit of the novel - too watered down.
But then again - considering it was the then 21 year old Damian Harris' first dip into film production (and was made on a very low-budget), it's not too bad. It's often said that this was the UK's attempt at creating their own version of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, so I can't help wonder what might have happened if a more experienced film-maker such as John Hughes or Bill Forsyth had produced it with a larger budget behind them?
Just thoughts...
I disagree............It's pretty entertaining movie. Most people here are so bitter. I'ts just an 80's flick and the expectations can't be that high otherwise you lose sight of the movie. I enjoyed this film a lot in 1989 when i was 18 and i saw it last night and enjoyed it as well.
shareI've found that most of the people who liked the film hadn't read the book. Go figure...
shareI read the book. The book was good. The movie was great, a classic, unforgettable.
shareYep, unforgettable for all the wrong reasons, and not a patch on the book
shareThey got the DVD for $3 at Big Lots!. I had just recently seen Say Anything for the first time not too long ago, so I picked this up for Ione Skye.
Are there any big jumps/bits cut out from the book in the movie?
It just seemed weird that she'd randomly run into the brother-in-law and then they just start a hot romance again.
I thought the soundtrack had some pretty cool songs that I'd never heard and managed to avoid cheesy 80's music for the most part.
Not bad entertainment for $3. It's hard for me to imagine Dexter as a big time star after this though.
Lots of plot points were omitted from the book, and most of the characters were unfaithful to the book characters as well. Have to agree about the soundtrack though, Willy DeVille's "Assasin of Love, Simon Harris/Lonnie Gordon's "I've Got Your Pleasure Control", Shakespeares Sister's "Electric Moon" and "You Made Me", Jool Holland's "We're Through" - some great songs!
shareI read the book. Its good but the film is better.
