Shane only joined boyscouts the swim team and the football team because of Alex, he wanted to run away with him to Mexico, and he even got in a fight w/ Sarah in "hell" over him. A little clue that Shane was homosexual was the dangling earing on his right ear. During that time period it was very stereotypical for gay guys to have their right ear pierced. I thought it was pretty cool for this to be included in the movie.

I thought it kind of seemed like the sister, Lea, was in love with him as well. Sure it's OK for siblings to be close, but she seemed obsessed insisting on spending every waking moment with him.
