precious bane

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the movie Precious Bane a made for TV movie. I would prefer it on DVD

reply

I've been looking for it myself for years and have finally found it on e--bay for $64.99. The only thing is-- it's on VHS and it is Canadian, so I am not sure if it will play on American VCR's. I, personally, am going to wait to see if the price goes down. But you may wish to check it out.

I,too, have been looking for Precious Bane for the last fifteen years. I tried to record it when it was on PBS, but Part 1 didn't record, and Part 2 was an extremely poor quality recording. Then I accidently recorded over it except for the very end when her brother's farm is being auctioned and they try to drown her. I still have that tape and cannot bear to part with it until it comes on TV again so I can record it, or it comes out on its own dvd/vhs. If any one can help locate it please let me know.

PS. I didn't see that one on ebay. Was it someone's home recording or was it an actual licensed, for sale, in-a-box dvd/vhs? It doesn't matter to me which, but I agree that $65 is too steep.

reply

>have been looking for Precious Bane for the last fifteen years.

Me too. I did tape it, good quality, but the tape broke! I've been hanging onto it, hoping maybe it can be spliced somehow...

reply

I better make a copy of the tape I made so that doesn't happen to me too! I have watched this movie so many times it must be getting weak....

reply

I am lucky enough to have a copy of my VHS on DVD, a film that changed my life.

reply

This story has resonated with me since my mother gave me the book when I was 14. This movie is beyond description, the performances haunting... I will *never* forget it.

If you can't find VHS/DVD, read the book. Pure poetry.

Hi, Would it be possible for me to buy a copy from you on either DVD or VHS? It does not seem to be commercially available anywhere and I would love to have it.

reply

It can be viewed for free on Youtube in 13 parts, you can also download it from you tube by using the following page that enables you to download from youtube to your hard drive: http://keepvid.com/

You just highlight the link at the top of youtube and paste it into the required space on the keepvide.com page

Hope this helps all you fans of the film untill the BBC get there act together and release it.

That's good news, phil. The quality is fantastic.
I do hope it gets lots of views. The trouble is, this is a forgotten masterpiece. I've told so many people about it and they've never heard of it. Shame on the BBC.
I have a DVD that I bought on the internet (quality OK) and one that I made myself from my old VHS recording. But this one on youtube seems better, so I might have a go at downloading that as you suggest.
Thankyou phil!

I watched this over Christmas. What a great film! Janet McTeer is amazing. (When is she not? I recently saw her in Songcatcher -- such talent.)

reply

Hi RM!

However did you get to see this? Was it shown on TV in your neck of the woods?

Isn't it amazing? One of my absolute favourites. It's so atmospheric and evocative. Janet Mcteer is wonderful, of course (as is that prosthetic harelip!) And John Bowe is fantastic as the principled and courageous Kester Woodseaves. Don't you just love the way he acts at the bull-baiting?

Who knows where the time goes?

reply

I found it uploaded on the Internet and watched it online. I love John Bowe's character; he reminds me of someone (another literary character), but I just can't think of who.

reply

Hi RM.

The aforementioned Youtube upload seems to have been removed, but I've found a new one (cryptically titled to avoid the copyright police!):

Is this the one you watched, RM? I love John Bowe's rendering of Kester. What a hero! Lol. John Bowe has had a varied career since, but he was his most dashing in PB.

That's where I watched it. (Love that yt account. great uploads.)

I am writing you this from Canada, to tell you that anything on a tape or dvd will play in Canada just the same as it will in the U.S. Tapes and I think dvds are different in Europe and will not play in North America, but just as you are able to bring a lamp across the border going either way, you can bring tapes and dvds.

reply

I've still got it on VHS frome when I recorded it. I CANNOT understand why it's not on DVD.

reply

Nor can I -- or why it isn't shown again. I wonder who owns the rights and why they aren't interested in showing/releasing it. It may not have an enormous audience but it could find a new one as it did in 1989.

reply

It's in the BBC archives and they hold the rights to the screenplay. Why they don't show it again is a mystery.

i just caught it on TCM it was good

reply

I have a good print of this on dvd, I can copy this onto ntsc or pal dvd- anyone interested then contact me. My email is [email protected]. I am happy to help you own this beautiful film.

reply

Really? Where did you get it from in the first place?

My parents both had small parts in this and they've been looking for a good print of it for ages. We have it on vhs but it's pretty knackered by now.

reply

Hi, I transferred the film from a video to dvd- quality came out very good indeed and I have it in both PAL and NTSC.It's a wonderful, poignant film.

reply

Just to let you know that someone has done the same and is selling the DVD on ebay at quite a reasonable price. Quality not bad.

"She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me"

reply

Yes, I saw that on sale, but I am very happy with my own, quality has come out very well indeed. It's a wonderful, evocative film, however the book by Mary Webb on which the film is based is even better!

reply

Just to say that I agree with you about the film. It was wonderful and Janet McTeer's performance was terrific.
Some years ago, Janet was shopping in my local Sainsbury's store in Brighton. At the time she was in a popular series called The Governor. I gathered my courage and approached her and said how much I had enjoyed Precious Bane (must be annoying when people do that, but I HAD to tell her). She was pleasantly surprised that I should compliment her on a programme that was relatively old and obscure. And boy is she tall!
I have read the book and enjoyed it, although the Shropshire dialects are slightly impenetrable! The production was very faithful to the book.

reply

Really interesting to hear about your meeting with Janet Mcteer. She sounds a nice person. I love all of Mary Webb's books. Have you seen the film Gone to Earth based on her novel? It's very good.

reply

I just looked up Gone to Earth on IMDB. It's an old film so I must have seen it at some time or another, but don't recall. I'll look out for it on TV.
I'm afraid that Precious Bane is the only Mary Webb book I have ever read.
What a shame that the film is so little known. I loved it when I saw it originally, so taped it when it was shown a second time. I'm so glad I did because the BBC has never repeated it. Has it been reshown wherever you are?
My VHS copy is very good and now I have this DVD. So I can make copies and try to make converts of my friends!

"She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me"

reply

Hi, Yes Gone to Earth is old,( 1950), but it's a stunning colour film. If you love Precious Bane, I am sure you will also love Gone to Earth, but beware tv often shows a much mutilated version WILD AT HEART, very badly cut.I have read all 6 of Mary webb's novels, all 6 are totally captivating.

reply

I watched "Gone to Earth" many years ago,1960s on BBC. I only saw it in B/W but it really impressed me. Jennifer Jones was never better, and David Farrar a much under-rated actor. Would love to see it in colour. I read Precious Bane & Gone to Earth recently. I will look up Precious Bane on YouTube. Incidentaly, there were plans to film Precious Bane in the 1960s. Terence Stamp & Julie Christie were to star. Obviously it was never filmed.

reply

The color in Gone to Earth is stunning. I recommend it.

I'm happy to help people on this thread acquire a copy on DVD (transferred from VHS). Pretty decent quality, considering it's age. Please refer to my post on the main message board for further detail.
