I figured it was just to play with Louis' head, to show him exactly how powerful this evil was.
He liked Jud a lot, and the neighborhood too, and the evil knew it...so it made him think it had been taken over & destroyed.
"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."
That was a cool little moment.
I remember when I was a kid I once had a nightmare where half of my actual house had become all messed up like how Louis saw it. I still remember that dream even though I was only 5 years old. It was so vivid. Man this movie messed my subconscious about the wrong way. Saw it way too young.
I'm replying a bit late to you, but I agree. I saw it at 9 or so, and was really sheltered & impressionable. Music would make me cry, even at that age, and things always really affected me deeply. I used to daydream about a beautiful forest...after watching this, it destroyed my subconscious for awhile. I couldn't even close my eyes to envision my daydream without it looking like that horrific, dark, foreboding swamp. Deep confessions LOL.

shareThis was a scene I really liked too. I think part of the reason it is so creepy is it is kind of a wtf moment and you wonder why we are seeing it looking like a swamp. It's the fact that it kind of makes no sense is what makes it so terrifying. If Louis had been seeing juds house covered in blood it would not have been near as scary. I think the swamp thing also leaves things open for interpretation. I saw the swamp as decay and rot as if the evil from the burial ground was infecting the house and rotting it with evil. Did anyone else notice that the staircase looked a little crooked too. And was I the only one that heard a weird sound that sounded like a train horn to me. Very creepy and effective scene. I read the book so many years ago. Can someone tell me was this visual or something close to it in the book? I am going to have to read it again.
