French Connection III???

How is this not, a sort of spiritual successor to Gene Hackmans infamous Popeye Doyle? This movie had the car-chase through the brooklyn underpass, Gene running up the train-station to nab the killer. Perhaps the trauma of killing the Sniper in the first French Connection got him revved up to kill the final sniper in this film, being Tommy Lee Jones... The movie tried to maintain the same type of realism as the first.

Perhaps after killing Frog One in the 2nd French Connection, Hackmans character, who is really Doyle, joined the marines during the Gulf War or some other satellite war in between the late 70s & 80s, until 1989, when this film was released.

Any thoughts?

Nice theory...

Except for the fact that the first Gulf War did not kick of until 1990. At least one year after this movie was made.

Fun fact: The 1981 Stallone movie Nighthawks was originally intended to be The French Connection III.

Yes, there certainly is a FC feel in this movie. I watched The Package again last night, and at the end Gene's character walks down train station stairs, these stairs look like the famous shooting scene in FC, in Brooklyn..

French Connection 3 would have been pretty cool tho.
