Devil Red

This movie is more educational then entertaining. I found the symbolism of the red-headed girl and her so-called outcast behaviour to be powerful. I found it uncomfortable listening the the religious words and combining it with gay issues. I guess it is because, even today in 2010 - the issues are still very contemporary, for example the Pope from the Catholic Church still does not accept gays. So even though the movie was produced in 1989 - the topic of religion and gay issues is still very alive today. I found the movie disturbing and heartbreaking. Too much of anything is probably not such a good thing. I felt sorry for the orphaned red-head. She not only had to find her way in a very strict home but she also had to find her way around accepting herself for who she was. The end seemed to show light - but at the same time it left a lot of questions about her identity unanswered. Will she survive or will she be overwhelmed? Those are the questions the viewers are left to answer at the end of the movie.
