Raging Thunder on Dvd?

GeniXo

Has anyone seen this movie on Dvd?

reply

yeah dude, i own it. the music has been changed which kinda sucks however. nothing beats the original theme music of this film and way it fuses with the fight scenes. simply superb.

Hey Folks

Some guy on Ebay is selling this. I know the original No retreat no surrender he is selling is decent. I think he may have #3 soon too. Now if we can just convince him to makea good transfer of King of the Kickboxers and GYMKATA!

get the VHS, the dvd releases of this film are screwed up.

reply

Unless you grab the bootleg off ebay, with the original songs.

reply

Just got a used copy of the US vhs, but are you sure the end crdits had someone singing an end theme? They sing it in the beginning (which only shows the title No Retreat No Surrender II over a landing airplane), but it's only instrumentals in the end... This is the original 90 minute version of the film, so maybe I'm missing something... everyone has said that the extended version is missing this track in the end credits, but so is the 90 minute version I have... I'm so lost!

reply

yeah. the instrumental version is stuffed. try to get your hands on a copy of the australian extended vhs cut. i have a ripped vhs dvd copy of it which i can copy. let me know if you're interested.

Wow, I am horribly confused now! So how many different versions are there? These are the ones I know of:

1. 90 min (NTSC) American cut titled "No Retreat, No Surrender II" (No "Raging Thunder" subtitle) featuring "Everywhere With You" in the opening credits, but instrumental ending music.

2. 104 min (PAL... roughly 108 minutes NTSC) International cut titled "No Retreat, No Surrender II: Raging Thunder" (I think it uses that subtitle... haven't seen the R2 DVD) which may have a different score from the US version.

So which cut is the Australian one? Is it the same as the 104 minute cut, but with "Everywhere With You" in the end credits? Didn't think there were so many variations of this movie!

reply

Yeah. It has "Everywhere with you" at the beginning and at the end of the film. it's really cool cause the song just starts up as they're beginning to walk away from the burning alligator pit. it's really climatic and creates heaps of atmosphere.

it is the extended cut (104). Be warned, i also have the R2 DVD copy of the film and it is cut by about a minute. the scene that made me realise this was when the snake skinning scene was omitted. the australian dvd has the same stuffed up score as the R2 but it runs the same length as the ausrtalian VHS.

the austrlian vhs, however, is ultimately superior to all the versiond as it's; a)uncut and b)features the original and uncompromised soundtrack (my fave of all time).

All right, for the sake of keeping track:

1. US Version: 90 minutes; "Everywhere With You" in the beginning, but instrumentals only in the end credits

2. UK DVD: 104 minutes; Same score as US version; missing snake scene (which I read about being cut, due to "compulsory cuts" for animal cruelty by the BBFC)

3. Australian DVD: 104 minutes; Same score as above two versions; contains snake scene

4. Australian VHS: 104 minutes, same cut as Australian DVD, but with complete original score with "Everywhere With You" in both the beginning and ending

Does this sound about right? I'm a stickler for "alternate versions" details! I just saw the international cut of the original No Retreat No Surrender, and it's VERY different from the US/UK theatrical cuts! Not only does it feature 15+ minutes of additional scenes, a lot of scenes are flipped around in different order!

reply

yeah the no retreat no surrender films are cool in that theres heaps alternate versions. especialy if you see the 2nd in the order of US version first - love it - and then see the australian extended cut. that really puts the cherry on the top.

however, i think the score is what really makes the movie. and its the australian version which features the best uncompromised version.

here is a little bit of trivia for you, BORN TO DEFEND (1986), was released with the NRNS2 soundtrack on dvd. i couldnt believe it when my friends showed me the movie, and im like "wait a minute... i know this soundtrack... its NRNS2!!!!!".

i've still yet to see the not-international version of the first NRNS.

reply

Well, the international version of the first NRNS uses music from various Hong Kong films such as Project A and My Lucky Stars, so I guess it was a habit of Seasonal Pictures to do like Golden Harvest and "borrow" stock music for the second NRNS. But anyway, I'm sure a proper version of II could be made on DVD by using the video from the Australian DVD and the audio from the Australian VHS, which is a project I'd be willing to take up!

reply

aha! but thats not the whole story! only the 'born to defend' dvd uses the nrnsII score. the original i believe does not. i have made a thread about it on the board of the film a while ago. you should check it out.

but make sure you remember, that david spear wrote the original music featured in this film - specifically for this film!

his score on exterminator 2 is also amazing.

reply

So, which version of NRNSII used the BTD score? I have never seen BTD (heard so-so reviews for Jet Li's only film as director, so I've been hesitant), but it's always interesting when one film "borrows" music from another.

reply

The australian Extended cut. it was pretty interesting watching the film with the nrns2 score. very interesting.

reply

I had a feeling since the extended cut of the original NRNS used music from various Hong Kong films as well. If anything, the extended cuts may be semi-workprints since they feature more footage and a "temp soundtrack"... dunno, just a theory! Anyway, I'd be up for doing the DVD project combining the video from the Australian DVD with the audio from the Australian VHS. Lemme know if you're interested!

reply

Trust me the picture quality is probably better on the australian VHS than it is on the DVD. the dvd quality is horrible. i transferred my VHS onto dvd and it OWNS the quality of the 'official' dvd release. best just doing what i did.

Bad Habitt, let me know what's going on with the DVD? Been trying to get ahold of you.

So is the Australian VHS considered the best version of the movie?

I have it as well as the 5-DVD set. I've never watched the DVD, but know it is also missing the subtitles for any Thai dialogue. I checked that part. I had no idea there were further cuts or music changes.
The lack of subs was a big enough reason for me to hold onto the VHS and watch that instead.

I should probably rip it to DVD in case it's damaged. Hopefully it gets a blu-ray release to go with NRNS1. I was only really into the first 2.
