Shoulder patches and badge

Why were the sheriff's wearing Los Angeles County sheriff's shoulder patches? The elected sheriff of Los Angeles County would not have his office in a town of 8500 called Danford. Also the sheriff would not wear a silver badge, he would wear a gold badge.
