Overrated

Not sure why this is always crowned as a christmas classic. Its your average run of the mill christmas themed fodder. Help me to understand whats there that makes it a classic.

reply

It is my favorite Disney comedy movie, but you can't be everybody's cup of tea.

reply

Shitters full!!! Best line in cinema😂🤣😄 This movie is a classic!!!

reply

Hey Griswold, where you gonna put that tree?

reply

WRONG.

reply

It's funny and geared towards adults. which is rare for Christmas movies. It has some hilarious moments and great one liners.

reply

I’ll agree here. there isn’t many Christmas movies geared towards adults for sure. Only one I can think of is 4 christmases

reply

There are certainly others. Bad Santa, Violent Night and Fatman are all aimed squarely at adults. And while Love Actually and It's a Wonderful Life are appropriate for all ages, their themes are very much adult-oriented.

reply

I think the OP didn't realize that the reason for all the similar movies is mainly because this one set the mold.

reply

It doesn't hold up.

reply

That's your opinion and that's just fine.

reply

But Love Actually has that couple body doubling sex scenes, sometimes in the nude. Possibly the most adult xmas movie of them all. Though I assume those scenes were heavily edited for broadcast TV.

reply

It's a British movie and generally Europeans are less sensitive about nudity and sex than Americans are. Sweden rates it 7 for example, Germany 6 and Norway 11. It's rated R in the US and the TV version is TV-14, so yes, it's edited for TV.

reply

Very interesting! Ive never watched an edited TV broadcast of Love Actually but I always assumed that the movie was indeed constructed so that story could be removed entirely without affecting the rest of the movie. The article proves me right.

reply

It's not "overrated," but it's also not quite as good as some insist it is. It has slow points. It gets quite sentimental at times. But it also has some hilarious moments. I'd give it a 5/10.

reply

You summed up my thoughts well. 100% agree it drags at moments

reply

it is great christmas film because it have peak chevy chase and randy quaid who are two great comedy actor, and it have script by legend john hughes - he write many interesting scenes and characters for film. film never boring.

run of the mill christmas film = elf, miracle on 34 street, grinch, polar express, santa clause, jingle all the way. these film are entertain but no magic or spark like christmas vacations.

reply

Just saw this for the first time today. Really didn't understand the hype and how it's a cult classic. Chase was so annoying in this with his tweaker eyes. He seems like a dick on and off camera
Also not sure why the title is what it is. They never took a Christmas vacation!!! Unless them driving to the mountains for a damn tree was the vacation?

reply

back in the 90s when the bosses gave you a week off paid to spend with family on Christmas...boomers had the best life. Yeah they didnt have the internet, but damn if they didnt have their own set of perks.

reply

I don't remember my parents ever getting a week off for Christmas. My Dad worked in Plastic Chemical Engineering for 3M and he only got Christmas Eve and day off. My Grandma worked 3M corporate with the same deal. My mother worked at the town vet clinic and they had the same deal. If anything, I find jobs to be more willing to give PTO than they did then.

Maybe it is only specific jobs that did that.

reply

Probably government employees.

reply

We did have a good PTO package when I was a title 5 GS9

reply

FALSE.
