Why isn’t the opening song....

...a huge hit and a Christmas favorite? It’s extremely catchy! And, really...that song, and the “see, no lines” scene are the best part of an otherwise so-so movie.

Why does Mariah’s song from Love Actually get such immense praise....while the Christmas Vacation song gets completely overlooked?

Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was released as a single in 1994 and was not written specifically for Love Actually, which was released 9 years later in 2003. It is a bona fide Christmas classic.

Christmas Vacation was written specifically for the movie and never released as a single. And while I like this song and is fun and catchy, the two songs are hardly comparable. That's just my opinion of course.
