The English translation of the Japanese subtitles is on the third subtitle channel, which is mislabeled French.

It never occurred to me it was mislabeled

would have never realized that. really just thought you weren't supposed to understand them. lol thanks a bunch

I watched it last night from Netflix and the French subtitle selection only gave me French subtitles. Same with Spanish. Very frustrating as I keep hearing that the dialogue of the Japanese couple is the best.

I've never seen the film with subtitles. I thought I wasn't supposed to understand them either, and I still really enjoy it! I'm really interested in knowing what the hell they're talking about!

The Subtitles menu on the DVD I got from Netflix offers French and Spanish. Selecting these options gives French and Spanish subtitles, respectively. I haven't found any English Subtitles.

Someone on another thread gave the instructions for finding them on the Region 1 DVD:

The English translation of the Japanese and Italian dialouge can be turned on by insuring you have the main movie subtitle option set to "none" and then calling up the subtitle channel menu on your DVD remote. Usually 4 options will show up ( French, Spanish, French - force caption, Spanish - force caption ), but if you have the main movie subtitles off, you will see only the last 2. Select either one of those and you should get the English subtitles you seek. Good luck!

It works on my DVD player.

I didn't figure that out... I was forced to watch the Japanese scenes with the French subtitles, which were pretty crappy anyways.

reply

I haven't been able to make it work. My DVD has no subtitles button, so I'll have to try another player. I thought the 'Mystery' in 'Mystery Train' was - What the hell are the Japanese people talking about besides Elvis and Carl Perkins?
