Is there a better living, English-speaking actor today?

I would dare say, is Daniel Day-Lewis the best English-speaking actor alive today? If not, who?

reply

Normally id say Robert DeNiro, Leo Dicaprio (although we have alot more of him to see to prove he's a fantastic actor to those who disagree with me), Forest Whitaker. But i just thought of Day Lewis and he would have to beat all those guys in terms of acting. his talent is beyong exceptional

reply

I agree totally. I must of watched this film when I was about 9 or 10, and even back then watching him perform blew me away. Gangs of New York was a rubbish film but he was the best thing in it, showing up anyone who was unfortunate enough to share screen time with him.

reply

it's true. he topples all the major actors (nicholson, dicaprio, bill murray) and even all the best character actors, who are generally more consistent (seymour hoffman, chris cooper, ray winstone). russel crowe at his best is in league with day lewis but he just does too many mediocre films (all of which he excels in). day lewis is the guy people go to when they have a role that seems uncastable.

reply

DeNiro is a classic, there's no doubt about that, but he certainly isn't among the world's best actors. He has turned in some horrible performances, and really seems to have topped himself with Taxi Driver (or Mean Streets; I can't decide)

reply

oh wow thanks for bringing back memories.. I cant believe I posted that Leo DiCaprio was among the worlds best actors! Because I now find him over-rated and an over-actor. And Forest Whitaker?? What was I thinking?? He's good and all but not among the BEST. I'll stick with DeNiro though

reply

I only mentioned DeNiro because he's considered to be one of the greatest. Leo I like, but same deal as DeNiro - he seems to have shortened his range with age (Basketball Diaries was brutal), and I haven't really seen that much Whitaker.

reply

Makes sense given the time you originally posted it, seeing as Last King of Scotland and The Departed had come out the year before.

reply

Yeah, I was just a kid back then too, and hadn't seen a whole lot. Right now id say the best living actor is Brad Pitt. Maybe in 4 years I'll regret saying that too.

reply

Daniel-Day Lewis barely came in many movies either and he's already proved himself with 3 oscar nominations, winning one... and was stolen off his Oscar for Gangs of New York in my opinion, with all respect to Adrien Brody who acted well in Pianist.

Anyway, the fact that he's not been in many movies and was exceptional time and time again shows what a great actor he is. In my opinion, the greatest and perhaps most underrated actor in the world today.

reply

if i had to name my favourite actor, i'd very probably answer DD Lewis.

reply

Indeed his greatness is equalled only by his underrated reputation. He is virtually unknown by name or reputation by such a large portion of the public. I wish he were given another great vehicle where he can really show himself to the mainstream public.

reply

This was on IFC (Independant Film Channel) recently.

I had never seen it before until now.

Daniel Day Lewis is God.

That is all.

reply

How is he underrated? If you ask anybody what they think of Day-Lewis as an actor 99% will say he's excellent. The fact that he hasn't been in many movies is he's picky with what roles he chooses. The guy almost gave up working with Scorsese for *beep*'s sake. He's great but I can't call him the best...I can't call anybody the best.

reply

He won the oscar in my opinion. You just can't compete with any holocaust propoganda. They have a grip on everything that's entertainment. Make a movie about Jews and your guaranteed nods.

reply

I think I dropped a long stinky one with corn in it that coulf act better than DDL.

reply

Yes, D D Lewis is not nearly as good an actor as Steve Zahn

reply

daniel day-lewis is an amazing actor, period. gangs of new york says it all. who could have done the butcher better then him?

reply

[deleted]

I think Day Lewis is a better actor than Bale. He does accents better, and doesn't have that lisp. They're the two best though.

reply

Day Lewis is the greatest actor in the world, whoever used Di Caprio and Bill Murray in the same sentence needs to take a long hard look at themselves, and if anybody mentions that bum Hanks in the same sentence as Day Lewis, im gonna load my shotgun .........

reply

norton

reply

Edward Norton, Yes that is a great call Berndt, he is a sensational actor, i sometimes forget about him, Berndt, me and you are on the same page, you know your stuff

reply

Why is that DiCaprio and Murray are excellent actors and when DiCaprio has as many years in his career as Day-Lewis, I wouldn't be surprised if he's in Day-Lewis' league.

Furthermore Tom Hanks and Daniel Day-Lewis...

I just watched this movie for the first time tonight. Lewis's performance in this movie was the best i have ever seen on screen. My mind is struggling to comprehend how incredible that performance was.

reply

cyclone, i know exactly what you mean, Day Lewis is absolutely 'Real' in this film, its a heartbreaking and uplifting performance from a greatly talented person, its not a 'Hollywood' performance but for me it is such a moving performance that it absolutely shows a guy like Hanks up for what he is, an amatuer .... Day Lewis is a cut above anybody in the last 20 years, he is on a par with De Niro, Pacino and Nicholson of the late 60s and 70s, just so real and so brilliant ........ Hanks, Cruise, Pitt, Clooney are movie stars not real actors, big props to Jack Lemmon too, im a big fan of Jack i think people underrate him

reply

Cruise and Hanks are movie stars, although Hanks has been really great. Pitt and Clooney show themselves as great actors every now and again however. Russell Crowe in a Beautiful Mind is in my opinion on par with Day-Lewis as Christy Brown. Crowe's performance brings me to tears every time, and although his character isn't true to the person it's based on (script's fault), he plays it so intensely and real. Ryan Gosling is definately up there as well after his truly fantastic roles in Half Nelson and Lars and the Real Girl (I never though anyone would be able to actually act in a movie with that synopsis, but Gosling changed my mind).

reply

DDL is not "on par" with DeNiro, Pacino and Nicholson, no matter what the time period. He is by far the best actor of any of them.

reply

Kevin Spacey is an absolutely phenomenal actor.

A life you love...

reply

Gary Oldman anyone? He's just as much if not more of a chameleon than Daniel Day-Lewis.

reply

My top five, in no particular order:

Daniel Day-Lewis
Edward Norton
Forest Whitaker
Kevin Spacey
Denzel Washington

Forgot Johnny Depp! It would be tough to choose between Depp, Denzel and Kevin Spacey for the 5th spot.

Other great actors: Christian Bale, Leo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Robert De Niro, Terence Howard, Morgan Freeman, Russel Crow, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jack Nicholson, Don Cheadle, Adrien Brody

I think Daniel Day Lewis is often overated and corny and gets such recognition from the academy because he chooses parts that are almost guaranteed oscar nominations, for example, playing a real life character seems to almost guarantee you an oscar if you do it well.

having said that I've liked him in a few things.

but in terms of my favourite living, english speaking actor my top ones are

1.De Niro
2.Edward Norton

Then any of Jack Nicholson, Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp

reply

Right now, I'd call him the best actor in the world, English or not.

reply

Jack Nicholson,Al Pacino and Robert Deniro in the prime of course

Today
Norton,Bale,P Hoffman and Depp have a good chance depending on the next 10 years

I think Gary Oldman is better then Lewis

I agree with the one post that Lewis is very talented but most his movies suck

reply

Despite all of Al Pacino's (The Godfather, The Devil's Advocate), Deniro's (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) performances etc. I still find Daniel Day Lewis the greatest actor that ever lived. He doesn't pretend to be the character. He - quite literally - becomes the character (off the sets, too).

My personal top 3:

(1) Daniel Day Lewis
(2) Ben Kingsley
(3) Anthony Hopkins

and then the others...

Jack Nicholson
Robert De Niro
Al Pacino

etc.

reply

There is no better actor then Daniel Day Lewis. He is, for lack of a better word, amazing. Russel Crow, Edward Norton, Anthony Hopkins, Jack Nickolson, Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Jonny Depp, Paul Newman, sean penn, micky rourke, Dicaprio. they are all on my top list. I mean, Russel Crow's performances in the Gladiator and A Beautiful mind are extrodinary. However, None of these actors are in the same league as daniel day lewis. when he does a movie, he becomes that role. His perfomance in there will be blood is the best performance in movie history. Every movie he is in is good because he is in it.

reply

agreed!

reply

For me,Gary Oldman is in the same league, but he did not have the right parts

THE WORLD IS YOURS

reply

Day Lewis is awesome. The mark of a great actor is not only to be convincing, but to be versatile. Every character Day Lewis plays is different. Now, I think Jack Nicholson is a good actor, and a very charismatic actor, but he has nowhere near the same versatility. He is not in Lewis's league. De Niro is great, but his roles are too often similar - and when he goes for something different we get a weird gay pirate from Stardust - but still an amazing actor none-the-less. I feel the same about Pacino, I liked him a lot more before he got shouty, but the guy can do subtlety like few others.

Gary Oldman of course is a masterful actor, who transforms for each role. He is in the same league as Lewis for definite.

I think Di Caprio is a totally average actor (though his performance in What's Eating Gilbert Grape was fantastic). Bale is good, need to see more from him. Matt Damon is average. Russel Crow is alright, but doesn't vary it enough.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman is usually pretty good.

But for me, in terms of screen charisma, subtlety, conviction and versatility it's about Day Lewis and Oldman.

Just my opinion.

reply

who are better non-english speaking actors?

i havent seen may foreign films but top performances in foreign film is undoubtedly romain duris in the beat that my heart skipped and daniel auteil in tell no one for me.

as far as english speaking day-lewis in my left foot and gangs for me,
and norton in american history x cannot be discounted

thing is with class actors like deniro, pacino , washington ,freeman, nicholson is that their performances although magnetic (among the best youll see) lack day lewiss range. im not saying they are bad actors or they cant bring a different edge as they are all magnificient, just that they seem to almost play the same role every time and you come to expect certain things which is not a bad thing but sets day lewis apart

with day lewis he seems to bring something different every time without losing any charisma.other actors such as wahington and nicholson make up for their lack of characterization with their monstrous screen prescence
but dont always bring both to the table. day lewis is as brilliant as a cerebal palsy victim as he is a confident mass murdering butcher

what films should i see to get a good picture of gary oldman? take it harry potter and prisoner of azkaban not a good start.

reply

His portrayal of Sid Vicious in "Sid and Nancy" would be a great start.
