Moontrap DvD?

I love this film. I don't know why it's so hard to find. Is there going to be a dvd release any time soon?

reply

I seriously hope so. I just watched it for the third time last night on vhs and it deserves a dvd release. But I think we will have to be patient on this one..

reply

It's been 16 years. We've BEEN patient!

reply

I used to rent the copy (VHS) at my local video store for years, until they decided to get rid of some old stock and gave it to me.

My all time favourite movie! It's better than Plan 9 From outer space!

reply

I too wish for a DVD of this movie, especially since over the last couple years we've been replacing all VHS possible with DVD, and just bought two DVD jukeboxes to hold our collection (terrific, no handling the discs each time we want to watch--just push a couple buttons). We've watched "Moontrap" a number of times and always enjoy it. It's a kick seeing 'Chekov' in something other than "Star Trek." And it's different! Not just another remake of a remake of a remake, or another not-so-good sequel, it's something fresh and unique. ... Does anyone know if there's a site to go to where we can beg the 'owners' or moviemakers to put movies on DVD? Maybe if enough of us could contact whoever it is, it'd happen.

reply

According to a post on HorrorDVDs.com from a guy at Code Red DVD, Moontrap will "never, ever, ever" appear on DVD due to weird legal issues.

le sigh...

reply

Could you expand on this? Horrordvd.com doesn't have a search field that I could find. I can _no_ reason if the tape is out that the dvd couldn't be released. Unless the tape was released w/o authorization and had to be terminated, recalled, and compensated for violations.

I loved this movie when it was released. Watched it numerous times. Hated that Bill Campbell got killed off so soon. The ending scene always reminded of 2001. I would rate it at a B+. Easily on par w/ what is released on the low-budget / indie stream now-a-days.

reply

Suggest you write/call Anchor Bay and tell them you want MOONTRAP on dvd. Anchor Bay is big supporter of Bruce Campbell and they might have the power to get it released.

reply

I gave up waiting and wanted to get rid on my bulky VHS tapes, so I paid one of those VHS to DVD transfer companies to copy my Bruce Campbell VHS collection (Moontrap, Sundown, Chase Moran and Goldrush) to DVDs. Okay, they are still VHS quality, but at least they won’t wear out!

reply

Anchor Bay Entertainment, the US chapter at least, apparently has a do-not-reply-to-consumer-email policy, so writing them is a vain pursuit.

reply

Snail Mail still exists

reply

That's what they said about the movie Heavy Metal.

Rose Tyler: Five million Cybermen, easy. One Doctor? NOW you're scared!

reply

That's what they said about the movie Heavy Metal.

And if memory serves correctly that is what people used to say about WKRP in Cincinnati due to copyright concerns about the music used in each episode.

This is not a War. This is Pest Control! Dalek to Cyberman - Doctor Who

Then you should check him out as the psi cop Alfred Bester on "Babylon 5".

reply

don't you mean "worse than Plan 9"?

reply

i think if it gets released it will be from image entertainment they released it on laserdisc ,you can see that in production companies on imdb, image have been releasing old horror movies for a while they might give this one a try.maybe try to beg them instead of anchor bay

reply

Oh I pray they make a DVD of Moontrap, it has to be the single most incredible film ever made. The acting, the cast, the sets ohhhh - Dude I'm in awe!!!!!

Well actually I'm not, but it's a pretty funny movie none-the-less :) I'm up for a copy!

reply

i too would like to get moontrap on dvd, i only have vaugue memories of it as a kid but i know i thought it was awsome back then.

reply

i was only a kid when i watched this film, i think we rented it on vhs a couple of times and i used to love it, i was young enough to even take it seriously to have nightmares about, so lol i kinda hold this movie dearly, along with 'alien' and 'the thing'. hopefully they will re-release this on dvd, because i've even tried to get this film on torrent (out of despiration) with no luck, so please important dvd release execs, read this post randomly between smoking your expensive cuban cigars, and make my dreams come true, cos santa sure as hell can't find this movie!

Back in Feb. '08 I ordered a DVD of Moontrap from MegoStore.com (Joe DeRouen, based in Arkansas), and this week it finally came. At first I was disappointed -- it looks to me like it's clearly a homemade DVD, probably transferred from a VHS tape, and the picture was a little bit blurry on our big TV. No chapter selection or special features -- just the movie. Also, it played fine till the last five minutes and then kept freezing up. However, I just now tried running it on our little portable DVD player, and it ran fine -- looked better on the small screen, too. So it's up to you: If you can settle for a no-frills DVD that plays OK (depending on your machine) but offers nothing extra, you can get it from Megostore for $7.95 plus a modest S&H fee. It's nice to have, but I'm also keeping my VHS version.

reply

I've just copied my VHS version to DVD for myself and done a new printed disc/DVD case label for it. It's good to have a version on disc, without having to worry about the tape getting damaged sometime, or gradually deteriorating/etc.

One thing I've noticed... the UK version of Moontrap is 86 minutes, and rated PG, meanwhile the american version is longer, I think? Not to mention rated R! Was the UK release seriously trimmed for sex and/or violence?

Time enough for the earth in the grave!

reply

The UK version is actually longer - it seems shorter due to being sped up for PAL 25fps. There are some minor edits to the violence and nudity, but not much. It features some extended/deleted scenes not featured in the US version.

Give a thousand monkeys a thousand laptops and they'd all be writing their stupid opinions on IMDB.

I keep a Wishlist for this and other movies and TV shows on my TiVo in case they show up anywhere, but several years and crossing a century boundary and it still hasn't turned up. If we can't convince those in control to release it on DVD, any chance it could get back on cable some month? Last time I saw it was in the '80s on HBO. It never comes on, yet Virus (1999) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120458/, which reuses the idea of alien machine intelligence using humans for parts ten years later, gets repeated over and over.

I'd subscribe to a new premium channel for the month, even sign up for a satellite provider to get a channel not available on cable, if I knew one of my long-lost desired movies was going to air, but I can't afford to be subscribed to every premium channel and every satellite provider out there and cable month after month, year after year just on a slim chance it might air.

It would be great if IMDb could provide for e-mail alerts for when something gets scheduled or made available for sale by download. So far though, it has been silent that Team Knight Rider http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0127398/ is available as video on demand from Amazon (widescreen for PC/Mac streaming, full-screen for all other devices, and in stereo for everything but TiVo).

reply

DVD? I'd like to see it on Blu-Ray. Moontrap rocks and is most underrated.

reply

Im guessing its not, but is it on Netflix? I've been looking for it on DVD for a long time as well.

reply

I found an outfit that sells DVDs of film versions that were never released in the US (some obscure copyright provision) or are in public domain or the rights have lapsed. I got a copy of Moontrap on DVD from them. It's pretty basic, just a copy from a VHS I presume, with no menu or chapters, it just plays. Comes in a blank envelope rather than case. Might just be a DVD-R kind of thing, but it does have the title and an image printed or screened onto the disk.

Lots of other classic low-budget films there, I also picked up TerrorVision, Megaforce, and for my kids The Dog Who Stopped the War and Jacob Two-Two.
