Why is Koenig the lead?

Koenig is an awful actor, especially in a film like this. He's not engaging, he's not likable. Campbell was young and interesting and well-known for these kinds of movies, and he had 1/10 the lines of Koenig. Why?

A little thing he did called STAR TREK.

maybe you've heard of it.

Walter Koenig is The Man in this movie!
Walter Koenig: action hero!
Walter Koenig: saviour of Mankind and the Earth!
Walter Koenig: taking on an entire race of alien-killer-zombie-cyborgs and kicking their arses!
Walter Koenig: seducing a gorgeous alien space-babe!
Walter Koenig: so god-damn cool that Bruce Campbell is his red shirt sidekick!
Walter Koenig: every man wants to be him and every woman wants to be with him!

I've been watching this for the first time just last night and I thought Walter Koenig was actually not too bad, because I was expecting a lot worse. I only know him from Star Trek and Babylon 5, but he seemed at his prime in this and took the lead seriously.

Because of his stunning looks?
