I am in the stage production of this movie and I play Delmount. I'd love to see the movie updated with a new cast as long as they cast someone who isn't very pretty in the role of Carnelle. Someone about 10 years older to play Elaine. And someone skinny and sickly to play Mac Sam. Not to mention they MUST have a black girl playing Popeye.

Hollywood just does not seem to understand age appropriate. Most beauty contest are for women around 20 yrs old. Most people have peers about their own age. There are demographics about everything even sexual attraction. If the people doing the casting followed these kinds of guidelines the quality of movies could only improve.

Why do you feel it should be recast? The cast they had for the movie was fine.
The way Henley writes, according to Kelly Morgan who worked with her in NYC, is supposed to be "kooky," yet it's imperative to cast people who are not kooky to play the part. Isn't that what acting is all about?
I am playing POPEYE for the American College Theater Festival at The Kennedy Center for the Irene Ryan Scholarship award, with Mr. Morgan as my acting coach, so that's why I have this opinion.

I also just finished up a run of this show as POPEYE.
I had a blast doing it!
She's such a fun character to play!

With all due respect in regards to the role of popeye, she does not HAVE to be african american. i've seen it played by alfre woodard, who is always a joy to watch, she is wonderful. however, i've also seen a production of it with a white woman, and she WAS the show, every newspaper in town that did reviews raved about her, the audiences went to see her. Not to sound like the rest of the cast was bad, however i'm just saying this in regard to the popeye character. Overall, the man who played delmont and the woman who played popeye carried the show. (longer than i meant. sorry for any errors that may have made the post difficult, i ramble...it's late)

why do you people even try to recast? knowing you cant?

reply

because it's fun to speculate. I'm pretty sure that most people here are well aware that we have no say when it comes to whether or not remakes are made and who gets cast in them. It's just fun to talk about it...lighten up, man.
