The more things change, the more they staty the same

When thinking about May Fools, I can't help but think of where America is right now, socially and economically. The workers and students are discontent at the huge inequities they see, angry because they feel they have done most of the work, while someone else has scooped up most of the money. Protests have begun. The wealthy are both scornful and nervous.

It's a scene that has been played time and time again, in one country after another. The struggle between aristocrats and common folk is one of the continuous arcs in the story of humanity. It is part of what it is to be human. Louis Malle's use of this struggle as the backdrop of this movie about relatives scuffling over resources is well executed, and was a fantastic choice.
