I missed info about the money--will someone explain? SPOILERS!

SPOILERS!

I watched this live on TCM (no commercials), and I got interrupted and missed the bit where they explained how the $10,000 bills came to the island--who took them from the mint? Who was the cigar smoking man sent to retrieve the bills FOR (the mint?) and why? Who's 'copter was it at the end? Am I correct in thinking Maubee only took the money because it was there, and to make the murder-by-snake look like a robbery gone wrong?

Contains SPOILERS:

The money was brought by Pater (the murder victim)--he was a CIA bag man. Unfortunately he was killed and the money stolen, setting the plot in motion. Patina (cowboy hat) was the next link supposed to bring the money to the contras.

The man with the cigar (Miller played by M. Emmett Walsh) was a CIA agent and Patina's handler. He was sent down to retrieve the money as part of an "Iran/Contra" style cover-up.
It was Miller's helicopter that crashed.
And yes, you're correct.
