Denzel Dubbed?

Caught this one last night and was intrigued: at times early in the movie, it seems like DW is speaking accent-free. Then there's a scene in the police station, where he is yelling over the partition between the "locker room" and the main area, where the cadence of what he says doesn't match the movement of his lips, and the speech is accented. From that point on his speech is accented. Anyone know if any of this was dubbed?

No offense but that's the stupidest remark I've heard.

The accent wasn't even that good -- it is not going to be dubbed. If a white American can do an English accent and vice-versa, Denzel can do a fine Jamiacian one.

mlevens1,

I ask a question about a scene where both the speech doesn't match the actor's lip movements, and it represents the first instance of the actor demonstrating accented speech, and you call that the stupidest remark you've heard? Given those circumstances the question is completely legit, so go *beep* yourself.

How can you tell his lips aren't moving to the accent, let alone the word? Are you deaf or hearing impaired? If you are, there is nothing wrong with this and in fact I’m quite impressed by lip readers.

But, do you really think this low-budget movie took enough time out of its schedule and budget to have Denzel Washington, an Oscar-nominated actor at that point (Cry Freedom, 1987), dubbed? If he was dubbed, this is not mentioned on Wikipedia.com or IMDb.com, and both sites routinely list trivia and un-credited persons. Roger Ebert, the first Pulitzer Prize winning film critic gave this film a 4 star rating (out of 4). Why don’t you read his review of The Mighty Quinn (1989) and see what you were supposed to be paying attention instead of trite details which probably have no validity anyway.

wait are you trying to say that low budget movies dont dub? seriously? dubbing has been a part of b grade movies since their inception, granted not all of them use dubbing but its nothing i would be surprised to find. however you i think you are right in that denzel wasn't dubbed, rather he just seems a bit clumsy with his fake accent.

and take a *beep* chill pill your attitude is distasteful, nobody ever said that you have to be an *beep* online, then again maybe its on some read-me file

It was Denzel's voice the whole movie through. Like one poster said' if it was dubbed at that part, it was by Denzel himself. Besides, the accent was poorly done by almost everyone in the movie. Denzel had several parts where the accent was pretty good (mostly quick one-liners like near the beginning "Den live wid it.")
Done numerous times and understandable, movies and shows (american/canadian ones) with Jamaican characters, the accent has to be "toned" down for foreigners to understand. Sheryl Lee Ralph's one was good (that's because she American-Jamaican), the Mad Man in the cell (he's actually Jamaican) and Cedella Marley (Well, Bob Marley's daughter so you know.) A lot of dialogue could have been okay if the writing of some words were substituted for something else. (I'm Canadian- Jamaican.)

I like this movie but I laugh a lot while watching it.

And why is one of the poster's spelling Jamaica as "Jahmaica" That's new.

I've been married to a Jahmaican for 37 years after dating her for 2 years upon her arrival as a college student from Jahmaica. I've been visiting the island every other year since 1977 and honeymooned there in 1973. Denzel affected a poor Jahmaican islander accent, he sounded like a US born Jahmaican raised outside the community. Even after 39 years of residing in SoCal, my wife still has a stronger accent then Washington. We both thought Robert Townsend produced a better tonality and cadence. Apart from standardized English, most Jahmaicans speak a dialect, a patois, that outsiders have difficulty comprehending. There are also slight regional differences on the island

It was probably just a post production error. ALL films have parts that need to be dubbed after shooting. This dubbing is almost always done by the actual actors, and are needed because of bad accoustics on location or other sound problems. Music scenes are almost always dubbed, one famous exception is James Brown, when you see him sing in a movie it's never dubbed, seems he couldn't dub his own songs, as he never sings the same song the same way twice.

Ha! No disrespect, but how many times has James Brown been in a film?

reply

There might be ADR done but I doubt Denzel was dubbed although the accents were al over the place.

Its that man again!!

At least 4 or 5 that I can recall offhand. Big part in "The Blues Brothers", he played the devil in another one (can't remember the name), there are a few more, I just can't remember the titles.
Hit up his page here on IMDB, I'm sure there will be more than a few.

It ALL looks dubbed, in post-production. Everyone. Not a good job, either.

But that is clearly Denzel's voice.

reply

It was definitely Denzel's voice all the way through. As for the scene in question, they probably dubbed his voice on that particular scene. To the poster that said some movies don't dub, look at Lilies of the Field, that famous scene where Sidney Poitier is singing to the nuns, that wasn't his voice. All movies do this when there are other songs that make the original delivery of the line hard to hear. No doubt, DW's accent in the film wasn't that good in certain scenes but I'd say he still did it quite well in the film.

WTF are you talking about? Denzel is a great actor who thinks on his feet. Read the thread about continuous shots and how he saved the best on in the film on instinct alone.
