I got the impression it was because as a teenage girl in a new city on her own she was losing her confidence, and part of pulling off magic is the confidence to do it.

You are right. This is exactly what did happen. She lost confidence in herself. You are your abilities so when confidence and self belief goes, you lose them too.

When I was younger, I thought it was because she had some lingering effects of her cold after getting caught in the rain, and she didn't let her body fully rest (she was up and about the very next day). As an adult, I think it's a combination of those things. Not letting herself rest to properly recover, as well as losing interest in what she was doing, as well as transitioning from childhood to adulthood.
