Question about the movie

I haven't seen the movie in a long time, but I remember that in order for Kiki to be considered a proper witch, she had to train a year away from home. So the question that is on my mind is who was supposed to be training her? This movie isn't like the Harry Potter series in which she goes to a special school where they train her, so was she supposed to train herself instead of an experienced witch?
