Mahabharata--Indian series or European mini-series?

So I'm looking for a screen version of the Mahabharata, because I loved the book so much (though I have a feeling I'd have gotten a bit more out of it if I knew Sanskrit and could read the original!!), so I was wondering, for those of you who have seen both: would you recommend the long European mini-series, or the LOOOOOOONG Indian series version of it? Maybe I'll just end getting both, I don't know...~sigh~ Any advice, anyone?

I am currently watching the Peter Brook version, and it is very well done -more of a stage presentation- close and intimate. It may be a shorter version of the original, as it seems it is a little over two hours. However, I would really like to see more of an epic, longer version by the Chopras. How to rent?

Please see the Brook version. See my previous posting.

Make sure you get the DVD version that is approx. 6 hrs and NOT the newly released 3 hour version

I am an Indian and strongly suggest you to watch Peter Brooks' version-the Indian version by B.R.Chopra is meant for all those ignorant people who thinks Mahabharata is just a holy book full with gods appearing here and there, voodoo magic, curses and bloody clan-fights over territory-the original script has much depth to it,which at least Peter tries to capture beautifully.Chopra version is SOOO bad-I got headache watching it!

WTF are "u" talking about??

Chopra's version is suited only for sap-heads who are either utterly retard, or has an IQ level below an average gorilla...it's an utter embarrassment - an epic monstrosity that tortured sensible Indians for nearly 2 years! Thus,if you have liked that version, you already know my assessment about your mental health - get well soon....and perhaps try to watch something other than Doordarshan's typically melodramatic soaps.

Great story I saw the Mahabharata on PBS around 1990-91 and it blew me away, up until that time and even today there haven't been many Indian actors on mainstream American television, the Mahabharata came across as a universal story that anyone young or old can relate to.
