Anyone know where I can get a copy?

I remember this, when it was on TV and found it really creepy. I thought that I had imagined it, until I accidentally found it today, whilst looking at the other film, which I had the same effect on me - The company of wolves. Unsurprisingly both of the stories were written by the same author.

I would love to find a copy so if anyone could give me any information, it would be most appreciated.

Unfortunatly, the video's long out of print, and it doesn't look like there'll be a rerelease any time soon (Yes, one really does exist, despite what some reviews claim). So you have two options:
1) eBay
2) Sendit.com (formerly known as Blackstar.co.uk) have a video hunt thing where they'll seek out out of print tapes for you.
Of course, neither guarantee results : (

Cheers for the information.

I was lucky enough to get a copy off ebay and it was as good as I thought.

This film is currently being sold at:

Good quality, too.

I do not agree with the reviewer that reticence about certain things "re-enforces the old taboos" It could just as easily be argued that 'taboos' help prevent certain things from happening.

The word itself is rather loaded, as it suggests that any type of prohibition on anything is just some sort of irratonal, primitive superstition. But this subject is too long for the tail-end of a comment. Anyway, you should have the movie soon!

I would also really like to have it on dvd (or even VHS). I found a region 2 (PAL) version for sale by doing an internet search. I suppose that's no more helpful to you than it is to me! Too bad: I doubt a UK film as unknown in the US as this one will ever get a region 1 dvd release. It's been many years since I saw it (at Film Forum in New York), but I remember finding both creepy and rather wondrous too (I liked it a lot!). Do let me know if you ever find out about a region 1 dvd of the film.

unlikely ever to be released on DVD as the rights were only licensed for a short time and have now expired

I loved this film. Saw it in a small university theater when it came out and went back 2 more times with friends. I looked for it for years and years and finally gave up, but I am excited to see there are places to buy it.

I remember feeling a bit embarrassed at how much I liked it, especially because of the twee bits like the little boy singing in the "crow's nest." But there really was something there, a mood, the power to bring you into its own magical world. It's stuck with me all this time and every now and again a scene will pop into my head. If I hadn't already loved Tom Bell before it this would have won me over. He did a brilliant job of showing the contrast between his constant, subtle menacing towards his family and his almost tender care for the toys in his shop.
