I think they ruined the film by the homophobia shown by the scriptwriters in the scene where Travolta asks Kirstie Alley's character if she's a lesbian and she slaps his face. That's giving out the message that gay is bad. How much better it would have worked (for me, at least) if she'd looked at him like he'd crawled from under a stone and asked if he had a problem with that. I like to laugh with gays, not AT them. Even back in 1989 we should have been more enlightened.
I'm straight as it happens but wouldn't be at all offended if someone thought I was a lesbian. I still say anyone who would be offended is a homophobic.
i don't think it had anything to do with homophobia. after she told him she was artificially inseminated, he automatically assumed she was a lesbian-that was what wasnt called for.

Why would you feel insulted by a movie character shortcomings? Many great movies feature characters with ugly personality-traits. I'm surpised when people are offended by these kind of things. As if every movie should send out your "perfect message". If you wish to read homophobia in this, which is a long stretch, why not accept that the character is homophobic? Many people are.
geez why does everything have to be so political with some people. It was just a funny line, added to the comedy of the movie. I think it is offensive, or at least depressing if you're trying to find or attract some one of the opposite sex when you're asked if you're homosexual, implying that you have a homosexual quality about you that might drive away the opposite sex you're trying to attract. ITS JUST A MOVIE
The way her mother meant it was that someone who's a lesbian would be more likely to resort to AI because they don't like men. As for James making the comment to Mollie (who never slapped him, at least not until they got to the hospital for the way he drove her there) he thought the same thing. Then again, why I'm even explaining this is beyond me because it's ridiculous to say that those 2 lines, or even just 1, ruined the whole movie - I personally thought the line in the cab was hilarious! It was cut on TV, but it was funny :D

I'm not homophobic, i have gay friends and don't have a problem, but when some1 thinks I'm lesbian I get offended, because I'm straight, and looking lesbian when i'm not, is kinda insulting. Over a year ago i got called an ugly lesbian, cuz this ugly bitch thought i was looking at her boobs, and i cried.

Was watching this movie the other day and was thinking to myself, yep theres gonna be some wanker saying this movie insults lesbians. Firstly who cares secondly she didn't slap him she gave a him a dirty look. Thirdly just cause someones insulted at being called gay or lesbian doesn't mean their a homophobic, maybe their just proud of being straight as gays are of being who they are, so yeh i couldnt be bothered going on
