The Warden and Leone?

Ok I haven't seen this movie in ages but why does the Warden have such a big vendetta against Sly's character? Did sly rat on him to the authorities or something?

There was a history between the two characters before the start of the film. Frank initially escaped from prison so that he could see his dying friend. Drumgoole was warden of the prison. Drumgoole had refused to allow Frank to go, hence the escape. It would appear Drumgoole's treatment of the prisoners, including Frank, were put into question as Drumgoole later explains how Frank went to the press and media about it. We are to assume he went to them during his escape. This resulted in Drumgoole's punishment transfer to Gateway prison.

Only correction that needs to be made was that it wasn't a dying friend he went to see, it was his dying father (he even says the line "...my old man..."). :-)

Frank never refers to him as 'my old man'.

Judging from how he speaks of him in the film, the person didn't appear to be his father, but a close friend, and a mentor to Frank.

Frank mentions him early in the film to Drumgoole:

I had two weeks before I was released.
I asked for one hour to visit...
...with that old man before he died
.

Later, Frank explains how he knows about engines and why he was in prison:

This old man named Galleti.
Took me off the street
when I was .
Taught me that I could do something besides hanging out on corners
Yeah. I owed him.

One night these punks broke into the garage and put a beating on old man Galleti.

The whole neighbourhood knew about it.
The cops knew.
But these punks were connected, so the cops didn't do anything. I did. So after all the smoke had cleared.....these guys were in the hospital, and I
was doing time for aggravated assault.
