Why was he outside of jail at the beginning?

He turns himself in. This doesn't make any sense to me. Anybody else find this weird??

He was a model prisoner, in a minimum security prison, with no flight risk and little time left in his sentence. He had that privilege, of spending a day outside. Its not the norm, but its not unheard of.

It's very common in the UK. Towards the end of a sentence prisoners who meet a certain criteria spend time on the outside so they can start to readjust to life there.

Watch the scene carefully when he checks himself into prison. The guard asks him, "How'd it go Frank, good furlough?" Leone was was on furlough, obviously one of his privileges being in a low security prison nearing the end of his sentence.

Were you even paying attention at all?

They do it in quite a few parts of the world and like we see here, usually associated with low security prisons. Some systems even have the reverse, where it's just weekend detention in the prison and life as normal during the working week.

Makes it all the more ridiculous then, when we're expected to believe a prisoner like Frank, could be tossed into a maximum security prison, without any questions being asked. I didn't mind the movie, as a Sly prison movie, but this underlying premise to the film, would never happen.🐭

As has been mentioned there's also weekend prison, which exists here in Canada. To my knowledge it's only if the prisoner has tremendous case to continue working. I believe a portion of his paycheque is taken and this can only be applied if the sentence can be carried under a year. So that's 3 months of jail time stretched to a year. I just think conjucal visits are a good way to go.
