How did this film do upon it's release?

I'm too young to have been cognizant of this film's release in 89. Did it perform well? Was there a positive buzz about it? How was the publicity campaign for this movie?

Dalton and Craig! Accept NO substitutes!

It was viewed as your typical Stallone action picture. He was in his Corba/Over the Top/Tango & Cash phase, where the critics had sort of lost patience with him. And it showed in their reviews, none very positive. Crowds were below average, only $22 mil for an end of summer release.

It got lost among the major blockbusters that came out that summer, i.e. Batman, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Ghostbusters 2, Lethal Weapon 2, etc.

I was in my 20s, I was regularly going to movies, and I was (and still am) a big Stallone fan, but I didn't notice Lock Up in 1989. It couldn't have had much promotion, and it must have passed through theaters pretty quietly.

Somehow I didn't really notice it all these years until last week, so I finally put it on my Netflix queue and just watched it this morning.

It proved at the TIME that Arnold was the bigger star but 25+ years later I think we can safely say Stallone had and still has the better career...
