Sad news for fans of this movie ...

Tommy Muñiz, the actor who played the leading role of "Santiago", died yesterday, 1/15/2009, at age 86, after been dealing with the effects of an aphasia since early 1990's.

For those who don't know, apart from an actor, he was also a very prolific personality inside Puerto Rico's entertainment industry. Considered one of the pioneers of local TV, he was a main figure since its very beginning during early 1950's, and he did it all along the way; he was a disk jockey and news/variety commenter, comedian, writer, independent producer, creator of many TV shows that would last for years, and a radio and TV station owner, among other roles at the industry during its golden years.

As an actor, he performed on radio, TV, movies and theater. He had the leading role at the only Puerto Rican movie ever been nominated to an Academy Award for Best Foreign Picture. On top of that, he was the owner of the first zoo opened at the country, "El Monoloro". He was certainly something.

For me, he will remain as a great example for all people in show business of a person who did it all always respecting his public, truly manifesting a labor of love while at it, inspired by his family and the social consciousness he felt toward Puerto Rican society.

Que descanse en paz, Don Tommy Muñiz.

I didn't know! I've been away from the Island for a long time but I used to enjoy his work as an actor and the shows he produced. Que descanse en paz.
