JAMES BOND: Timothy Dalton's 3rd 007 film - THE MOVIE THAT ALMOST WAS

In 1987, Timothy Dalton made his big-screen debut as James Bond in the well-received THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS. The film was a box-office hit, and critics and audiences alike praised his darker take on the character, which was much more in line with the character Ian Fleming created on the page. In 1989, the second Dalton 007 outing, LICENCE TO KILL was released, but this time, many thought they’d taken the character too far into the darkness with its grounded tale of drug lords and revenge despite well-received turns by Robert Davi, Talisa Soto and Carey Lowell . The film underperformed dramatically at the U.S box office.

Nevertheless, a third Dalton outing was planned. Tentatively titled THE PROPERTY OF A LADY, the film never actually got made, but it came very close. Join us on The Movie That Almost Was as we explain why a third 007 movie with Dalton never happened, and why it took six years for Pierce Brosnan’s debut as 007, GOLDENEYE, to get made.

According to Timothy Dalton, he would've started what would've been his third Bond movie in 1989 or '90 and there was a script that was actually written and finished. At the time that the dreaded lawsuit came, they were still trying to find a director.

And by the time that the lawsuit was cleared up, five years had passed and Dalton decided that he didn't want to do it anymore after having already been associated with the franchise for nearly 10 years at that point. Keep in mind that Timothy Dalton was first announced as the next James Bond in August 1986 and announced that he was officially done with the role in April 1994.
